Its in the engine bay fuse box...

Usually has ASC stamped on..

In the glovebox fusebox fuses 9 and 42 relate to SMG transmission.

Whats it doing ??
thnx for the post..... my smg has 6 times in the 6 months i have had the car ............decides slip itself out of gear and go into neutral, then wont allow me to engage a gear. unless i switch the engine off for a few minutes....really annoying when u have a queue forming......i thought by elliminating all posibilties that i have read up on similar posts, i wud start with looking at the relay......it seems at the moment all 6 episodes happen only when its frosty or snowy .

From your description...Salmon Relay is the cheapest thing to try..

Then check for low SMG fluid

Then SMG pump.. :(

erm where is it located ????? :? and if low what do you use ?

On my 2004 3.0i it's the Ultra Navy Blue Relay (part number 61368364582) located in the corner of the control unit plastic box under the bonnet. As far as I know the salmon pink relay is found on an M3 not a Z4. Your right in that it's the thing to change first as its cheap! Didn't work for me though. If the ASC relay is Orange (part number 61368366646) I believe its something to do with the ABS. Next thing to check is hydraulic fluid level as that can cause problems particularly when it gets cold. But then of course you need to find the leak and that's when it starts getting expensive. My initial problem was fluid level but the leak was coming from the clutch slave cylinder (not a cheap replacement on an SMG), Christmas was cancelled in our house. :( If your pump is priming then that's a good thing. Mine does so most of the time but not always so I think my pump might be on the way out as well. So that's the summer holiday sorted. Don't you just love SMGs!

Best of luck :)

How do you know when your pump is priming?
Just tried to start my SMG after two weeks in the cold...started.....jolted forward in neutral and now i have the transmission light on dash and it wont start.

This is happened to my Z4 E85

Check your SMG(relay) color NAVY BLUE (not salmon red)
Then have your smg updated and re-learned

now it works well. :driving:

But if this doesn't work next step will be

smg pump oil level
smg pump
clutch assembly

Hello this my first post for me here, I got a Z4 2005 SMG, its having the same mentioned problems with the gear, I was wondering if someone could tell me where exactly I could find the relay to be replaced, I have read many posts but I don't seem to get exactly its location.
Thanks in advance :)
