SMG – absolutely brilliant

To confuse you a bit more--DCT and SMG *are* manual transmissions, they simply don't use a traditional stick shift and pedal operated clutch. Automatic transmissions are a whole 'nother ball of wax.

cheers, if this was a boxing match i'd have been knocked out in round 1 hehe

Can people with driving licence (automatic transmission only) drive cars with SMG/DCT? I think DCT is classified as automatic, whilst SMG is manual.

You guys get licensed for the kind of transmission your car has as well as whether it's FWD or RWD? That's crazy!

In driving them, there is no difference in the way DCT and SMG work, just in my experience the DCT is way smoother and faster to shift.

I forgot you are in US. In UK, some people only learn driving and take driving test in a car with automatic transmission. They are only allowed to drive cars with auto box.

so what are the paddles things classed as?

AS Smokin said before, paddles can be used on SMG, DCT and conventional automatic transmission. Your car has no SMG or DCT. Many cars, e.g. VW, with auto box also have paddles on the steering wheel column. They make no difference from selecting gears with the gear lever.

No FWD/RWD split, only Auto/manual.

ok cheers, i now feel my car is rubbish, only joking lol

DCT is now the repalcement of SSG/SMG. Current M3 has M-DCT. Current M5 has 7-Speed SMG. SSG/SMG is not as smooth as DCT and automatic in city traffic, but very good on the race track.

I'd love a go in one, shame they could'nt put the SSGII into the /M as they did the CSL.

wow.. finally! a good write up regarding the SMG of the z4. many people have had reservations about getting one.. and i can see why. some may feel that it takes away from the driving experience. but whatever.... i love my transmission and i think its a blessing when im stuck in traffic or when i have to do a lot of driving. i just get tired of having to press the clutch pedal ALL THE DAMN TIME! i just pop that shite into auto-mode and im good to go.

i'll admit though...i did miss having a traditional manual transmission a few weeks back. i think it's cuz i saw a car going faster than mine... but oh, well! it lasted for a few minutes and i soon got over it.

I have a 2003 with the SMG and love it. Some people have trashed it and they are allowed their opinions... however, they seem to think SMG is an automatic tranny that you can manually tell when to shift but it's not. It's a manual tranny that disengages the clutch, changes gears and re-engages the clutch hydraulicly. Once you understand what it is doing, it is easy to drive and the performance is fantastic. In sport mode, shift times are measuered in less than a 10th of a second and will give you a kick if you push it.

Not for everyone but not deserving the trashing some people give it.
