Smelly mats

I bought some rubber mats for the Z a few weeks ago. Every time I get in the car it stinks of rubber, in a bad way. Sort of like worn wellies.

It's not that they have got dirty or wet,..they have smelled like this from new.

Does anybody else have the rubber BMW mats,..and does this smell go away eventually ?

You could try washing them in some soapy water and then giving them a good rinse. Might take away the strength of the smell a little. You sure it's not your feet in this hot weather?

I bought some cheap rubber mats for a little Peugeot I used to have - they stank so bad I threw them out after a couple of weeks.

Surprised the BMW ones stink though

I have the oem rubber mats, had the standard rubber smell for a week but it wasn't an offensive smell, can only agree with the others and say take them out and wash in warm soapy water and leave to dry outside.

Leave them to bake in the sun for a few days, should help get the smell out.

Got the BMW 'OEM' ones and no problem.

I had exactly the same problem and put them in the boot to protect the floor. A couple of months on, the smell has now gone.

Thanks, I fully understand. Now I can confirm that they are not "OEM's",..they are "floor mats".

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacture i.e. Are they original BMW mats?

It takes two seconds to check what OEM means.

I'll try the soap and water idea and maybe I'll jump in myself after just to be sure it's not the feet.

the smell went pretty quick with mine, if you ever wash the drivers one with the foot carpet make sure its fully dry before you put it back. I jet washed mine and didnt let it dry properly - it makes it stink!

heres an idea, ditch them and go for carpet versions, much nicer when driving in bare feet.

I've often thought about getting a good set of carpet mats made with a really deep thick wool pile - the same as you get with a Rolls Royce. Only thing is they would get totally trashed in winter.

I guess it depends what you use your car for, my girlfriends family had a farm and i was fed up of walking all sorts of 'crap' into the carpet

Why don't you have two sets then? The plush one for when it's good weather and your current ones for bad weather.

To me any form of carpet mat will look dirty fairly quick if you live in the (wet) UK and require more frequent cleaning, and harder work cleaning, than rubber mats. Just need to get rid of this smell whe I can a chance to clean them.
