Smell of petrol

Over the past couple of days, I can smell petrol when I start the car first thing in the morning. It's a 2003 3 litre. It doesn't do it later on. Is this usual?

Yeah, starts on the button, first time. It's quite a strong smell and if i smoked I'd certainly think twice about lighting up. I don't seem to be losing any and consumption seems normal. Strange that it only happens after being left overnight. I went to Lakeside today and it didn't smell when I started it up to come back, nor later when I put roof down to take it for a spin in some very rare sunshine.

You'd never notice a loss of petrol to smell. A few drops is all you need. Can't help with specifics. It's unlikley to be dangerous, but it need checking out.

Thought so too. Will book it in. I just wondered whether the amount of fuel needed to fire up 6cyl might have added a certain "je ne sais quoi"

Never smelled anything in my old 3.0 either.

Perhaps you perforated something during your air vent struggles :poke:

This is a difficult one as we don't have the same reference point - I may ignore it as nothing much.

A dose of cold air can cause it to run surprisingly rich (seen it on a dyno). Wonder if the cold + anti stall is causing much richness? I notice it with mine some times when I get out to close the garage door. Notice it a lot with the new exhausts :)

I'd be inclined to get it checked... please report back in case I've got something to be worried about

Funny you should mention about shutting garage door. That is exactly when I get the whiff! In fact, it seems to come from the rear end. Is there a chance that unburnt fuel is coming out the exhaust if running rich?

Damn... you called my bluff! Ummm.... not too sure, sounds like a question for the more mechanically minded. But yes, mine's been doing this for a little while.

The smell ofpetrol will be just about all i will be able to manage if it gets much more expensive
