SmartTop Fitting Tips

Check out http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=46986&hilit=smarttop page 7 onwards. Trim removal is easy provided you have trim removal tools, otherwise expect it to take a bit longer, with more cursing. Just don't do what I did, leave the keys in your pocket and be eaten alive by your own car!

Cheers, thanks for the link.

Strangely i took mine out on Sunday as the car is going in for warranty work.

I found it much easier to remove all of the clips and trim from the boot open position (like normal)

I could not get the last bit of trim out which runs behind the light unit until the boot lid hinged the other way.

Same for reversal. PS it the how to don't say so, don't put the trim back until you have tried the function and all is working.

Ah, that's what I was wondering. Are you certain you connected that big connector in fully? Does the lamp on the unit flash or is the light steady?

I've had the green light steady and flashing after a refit, but no joy with the roof. Pretty sure the mirrors worked in either case.

That is odd. The only issue I've ever seen is when the connector is not fully inserted. You must wind the clip on the connector fully back, then connect it firmly, then push the clip fully from one end of the connector to the other to grip it firmly into place.

Have you perhaps tried hooking the unit up via USB to the software you use to configure the smart top via your laptop/computer? Perhaps the factory settings are wrong and you need to configure it? Just like you can with the indicator stalk also.

Maybe it's not seated properly, I did have issues getting the OEM one back in to work porperly. Just odd that it was semi functional. I even unclipped the plugs to the left to get a good amount of pressure on it.

I pre-configured and the module prior to fitting, but I'm going to double check it now.

Yep, take the connector back out, ensure that clip/latch is fully over (from memory I think the latch part was all the way to the front of the car) then press the connector firmly down and then pull the latch all the way over until it clicks into place. Its like a set of gears that pull the connector down and to get it to properly seat the latch has to be all the way in the open position, then the connector in, then pull the latch right back over the other way. If you seat the connector and the latch is say half way, then it clips into position only half the way down making it intermittent.

my connector was the cause of any and all problems i had when installing...... hence the "don''t put all the panels back until tested" comment.

Would it not have been sufficient just to disable it via the key fob and indicator stalk?
That's all I did when mine went in for its rear light clusters.
I too had problems with the connectors and having got it working to didn't want to re-open the proverbial can of worms

After a couple of months of looking at other users signatures and wondering what a smarttop was, I googled it and definitely want one. Thing is i'm about as technically minded as a gold fish with this sort of thing! Anyone know of any retailers who will supply and fit? I've found it online at http://www.vividracing.co.uk/smarttop_roof_top_control_bmw_z4_e89_09_12_1013496252.php for £240 which seemed like a decent price but when I went through to ordering I found out they're a US based company and the shipping cost was ridiculous.

Simon20VT, hi Simon ,did you solve your Smart top problem?
I had the same problem: mirrors worked, roof didn't
I've sent mine back to the US to see if it's faulty
I had a solid green light not blinking but must have tried reseating connectors about 12 times!

So I found a place who will supply and fit called prestige performance cars, they have places dotted throughout the uk but their place in Essex is just round the corner from me :). They will supply for £269 +vat and fit for £60+vat. They also sent me this link with fitting instructions so plan to try that first http://www.mods4cars.com/sms/db/smarttop/ext/support/manuals/bmw/STLFBW3/install_z4/en.php hopefully the link will be useful for others
