SmartTop finally ordered... Now Installed.. Dangerously!

Are you certain the bracket that secures the plug into the roof module is fully pushed into place? It could just need some gentle encouragement. The type of clip/bracket ensures that when pushed fully down the plug is pulled into the socket making a better connection. It should be possible to just pop the top of the clip away from the notch in the plug to allow you to swing it back up and the plug will come out. Get some extra light in there to see what you're doing and you'll see the notch that the clip must be prised (gently) over before it can swing up. Its fairly straight forward provided you take your time and be gentle.. oh and don't have keys in your pocket to make the car try and crush you.

It looks as though it has been removed one too many times in its life and the mechanism on it has worn away so now it is stuck in there. Really don't know what to do - it's in there working but I can't return any of the trim

When you say you can't get the trim back is that because its fouling on something? If it were me I'd just find a way to conceal it all and put it back together, leave it in there, you can disable it from the indicator stalk if you need to take the car in for warranty work and the only time they might discover it is if they took the boot apart.

it's because the joint where the existing cable joins the smarttop is sitting proud so i can't get the trim back. I have PDC so unfortunately i don't have the empty void that you have. i think tomorrow i'll try to remove the trim to the side and store it in there but too dark now.

watching those videos almost makes me want an E39! really smart. :fuelfire:

very cool ,... dont reccomend it under devils arch between tresillian and truro tho !!!

Hi Matt

When I used it, it clicked in firmly and was fine, and I managed to lodge it in to fit and squeezed it in

Any issues let me know, and if you want to return it I will take it back, as you bought it from me.

Nick

Just at my parents now, parked in their garage and taken half the boot apart but it's now in and all the trim is back :) ! I don't think i'll be removing it any time soon. All seems to be working well apart from the boot opening half way through closing the roof with the remote :s only tried it once, hopefully just a random one off.

Hopefully the dealer won't notice it there when they take te trim off again to replace the rest light cluster there

That's actually a feature. Its a comfort access thing. Designed to empty the boot of the rood so you can put stuff in, then put the roof back down.

Depends on the dealer. When my car was in for service they did a software upgrade which failed twice because I forgot to remove or disable the SmartTop. When I informed them they removed it and did the upgrade OK. They had never seen one and didn't know anything about them. I wasn't charged or told off for being naughty but they said that they couldn't put it back I would have to do that.

I have occasionally been caught out with the unit. A couple of times I have pressed incorrectly and closed the car with the windows down accidentally. Neighbour came in the other week to see if I was alright/alive as my windows had been wound down for a couple of days! Always do a visual check on that as I am cack handed but forgot on that occasion.

Not sure whether disabling the SmartTop is enough for dealer work. I have a USB cable permanently connected and so can do via laptop. I would imagine that BMW diagnostic software would detect anything it doesn't know about even though the SmartTop software is disabled. Especially these days with dodgy devices being employed to clone keys and 'nick' our cars.

I asked about removing the unit a little while ago. I doubted if it was man enough to be removed and refitted on a a regular basis.

Sorry if this has been asked a million times before, I'm taking my car to the dealer later so need to disable the smarttop but I'm not finding the instruction manual particularly easy to follow for the indicator stalk. I removed the cable when I installed it as having some work done on the brake light there so didnt want it visible.

Can anyone explain how to do this please :)

Blip the centre button of the remote key fob.
Press and hold left-hand indicator stalk against spring pressure for about five seconds until dashboard arrows flash.
Release pressure and push up once on it.
Left-hand indicator should flash once.
Press ignition button to exit program mode.
Reactivation is the reverse of the above
it sounds complicated but is actually quite easy in practice

I don't think it is, the unit is fine but the connector has worn, probably from my sausage fingers trying to put it all together. the only way i'm removing the unit from the car now would be to replace the whole roof module.

It wouldn't have taken much for BMW to make all the functionality of the Smarttop standard features on the car, just a simple bit of software... they probably own shares in the company making the smarttop!

And thanks from me also!

Although you did demonstrate the process at fitting , this is a good memory jogger!
I will copy these simplified instructions and keep a copy with the handbook!

Ive just switched my smarttop off for the service on Tuesday - I used the stalk method and even with Titan's instructions I found the process a bit cumbersome. Anyway it's switched off for now! When it comes home I'll use the stalks to switch on again.

I think I'm right in saying that the push up the stalk up is a toggle on off for feature one?

One thing for certain, I'm glad I didn't ditch my laptop when I bought my iPad! The use in the boot is much easier and more visible.
