Small workbench vice

As it is time to prepare the Christmas list, I would like to add a small vice to this for my work bench.

Reviews seem to be all over the place, can anyone recommend a good one?

Ah - I am back over there next week. Don't rush me

I've had and still have record vices Paul, they stand lots of abuse and are very well made. We used to have them in the workshop when I was a plant fitter too, only ever known one to snap when we were swinging on an 8ft scaffold pole to shift a big bolt, way more pain than we should have been giving it.

Second that dont go cheap buy record. It should last a life time they are the only bench vices we buy at work.

Thanks guys, never heard of that but hence asking those "in the know" (exclude SRHutch of course).

Any good places to buy from (or models)?

Google ''Tooled up.com', and do a record vice search, you'll see a good range and prices, vices are sold by size, i.e., 4", 6" etc, there you can look at what you need then shop around for the best price.

My 2p on small or cheap vices? Don't bother.. Last thing you need is it to fail or slip when you are going at it!

I wanted a good 6" one for the garage, so grabbed an old Record No6 from Ebay for £35 locally. Painted it with the remnants of my brake caliper enamel, and then got some new jaws for £25.

Here it is after paint, but before the new jaws arrived;

I'd rather get 2nd hand quality, than new crap. I believe these are £400+ new?

I have added it to my Secret Santa list

Thanks for the pointers - very useful.

This.

Def go quality. Mine's had a tough life and never let me down.

No idea what it's called but has a flat surface behind the jaws. Perfect for giving things a good beating when proper dismantling doesn't work.. Very therapeutic too

Agree with earlier replies, Record were/are the best known brand and built to last, if you can, get one with a quick release, it saves a lot of time winding in and out.. haven't looked on Ebay but I would think most of them are collect only due to their weight.

Record every time, got mine used form a local school, had it over 20 years and it's still be going strong long after I'm gone.

6 inch a bit big, 4 inch is perfect for normal garage use
