Small oil leak - any ideas from where?

Hi, was out in my 2006 2.5 N52 today and was topping up the windscreen wash when I noticed I appear to have a slight oil leak from somewhere, see photo. Any idea where it could be coming from? What is the circular thing with the black cap on in it? - says on it that it should be torqued to 25.6 nm or similar?

There wasn't a huge amount of oil and looking down into the bottom of the engine compartment I can see a few drips but nothing major. It was enough however for me to be able to smell a slight burning odour when sat at traffic lights. I've cleaned it all up now and will monitor over the next few days to see if I can trace it. In the meantime, any suggestions appreciated......thanks!!!

Thats your oil filter housing mate

worth seeing if your oil filter housing gasket has gone- unless you have had it serviced recently and its a spill from that?

Thanks m8, yes it appears to be that. I watched a vid on YouTube showing how to change it, looks a bit fiddly. Any ideas what it would cost for me to pay to have it done? Ballpark? Ta.

I wouldn’t know for sure

Prob 2-3 hrs I’d say?

The gasket is only a few quid

I had a leak from the same area on my 3 Series (also an N52 engine).

Ross at RBM Hampshire charged £165.70 + VAT to replace the oil filter housing and oil cooler gaskets in May.

Perfect m8, that sounds a decent price. I'll see what options I have for a decent BMW indy near me.

That's not a bad price, the OE gaskets were £ 25 each when I got them from BMW. It's a bit of a PITA for bolt access and you'd need to get a quite specific socket.
