SLR camera

started to look at the eos 1000d - anyone tried it? is it a good bet? Is it that different from the 450d?

I looked at that then walked away. Can't remember why but the pros told me to. IIRC the 450 came with and image stabilised lens and the 1000 not so and is also a whole range down. I think the shorter the number the higher product range.

I've been a Canon user for over 30 years now, and have done plenty of professional work over the years and they've never let me down, so obviously would unreservedly recommend them.

I've had a 40D for a couple of years now and prior to that had a 20D (which is a fantastic buy second hand - superbly built on a metal body and results that are of a similar quality to the 40D for not a lot of money)

In truth, there's scarcely a bad camera around these days and they will all give great results. In my opinion its all down to personal taste - what interface you get on best with and what's the best deal you can get at the time of buying. Ultimately you get what you pay for, but I do think the old "Law of diminishing returns" comes into play - i.e. the more you pay the less extra you actually get.

Finally, don't get caught in the "megapixel trap" - just remember that the higher number of pixels the camera is able to capture only defines how big the final file size is. Quality is determined by the electronic components of the camera, the firmware/programming and (hugely important) the lens. Bear in mind that a good quality 5 megapixel camera will give an excellent quality print often above 250mm x 200mm size - large enough for most of us. A cheap 12 megapixel camera will just give you large but poor quality images (that fill your memory card up quickly!)

Having extolled the virtues of my Lumix, I got it out a couple of days ago and found that with it being very light and plasticky, the camera trembles with my worsening parkinsons. Even with stabilizer, it shakes, and you just don't get the shutter speeds of an slr.

After much research packed into a couple of days, I have invested in a Canon 50d with a Tamron 18-270 VC lens. What a difference, I can only describe it as the difference between shutting the door of a BMW to shutting the door of a beat up shagged out Saxo!

Even with my left hand tremor, the camera (Magnesium body) sits like a rock in my hand. Rapid fire shot is brilliant!

I am off to Aus' for 5 weeks in June, so I cannot wait to use it. Must be lots worth taking pics of in Melbourne/Canberra/Sydney/Blue Mountains/Cairns/Barrier Reef.

Chuffed to bits!
