SLK55 AMG or Z4MR

I'm not expecting this to be without bias on a BMW forum but I'm wondering if anyone has ever owned an SLK55 AMG ?

I'm currently looking at Z4MRs around the £10K mark which is obviously a fairly small number of cars and quite like the SLK, I imagine them to be ballistic quick in a straight line but rubbish in the twisty bits.

Anyone have any thoughts or experience ?

Had a 350 SLK.......after a boxster S ....was surprised just how good it was in the twisty bits......better than the Boxster

That surprises me, I've thought about a Boxster S too............any reliability issues with either ?

Oh yes...........The first Boxster S ate second gear ( a common problem).....then lunched its big ends ( another common problem).then fried the engine ecu........the second Boxster S was reliable and the SLK was faultless too

When I replace the Corvette it will be another SLK, and hopefully an AMG 55 version

I like the rarity of the Z4MR & SLK55 so I probably wouldn't bother with the Boxster but there are a lot of nice examples around at very tempting prices. :? :?

Something else to consider.......a SL AMG.......supercharged V8 making big numbers

I've considered them but I think they're a little too big for what I need.............hardly an agile sports car despite massive power

I must admit I have an itch for an AMG 55 SLK. Do I need to go to confession?

Must be contagious............I'm not sure they're any better than a Z4MR but look good & sound epic

I've always liked the SLK 350 and the AMG. Looks and performance and a retractable hard top. Never driven one or even sat in one so can't compare, however some who have say they aren't as comfortable inside the cabin as the Z4, and then of course there's the 'girlie' image :fuelfire:
EDIT - just remembered I owned a SLK 200 for a day and returned it due to a faulty gearbox. It was an early model and felt old and clunky to drive, I'm guessing the later model 350's are a different beast entirely.

That's a dangerous route to take Marlon, some would say both have a "girlie" image :fuelfire:

Good job I'm in touch with my feminine side
I reckon you could get away with a black SLK with a big engine and keep your machismo

Me too mate lol

I'm too old to give a f**k what anyone else thinks anyway, also too big & scary lol :fuelfire:

I test drove an SLK AMG and a Boxster S before buying the Zed. I was impressed with the SLK - nice cockpit, very powerful, good handling - I just couldn't shift the feeling that there should have been curling tongs in the glove box!

I have never regretted getting the Zed! :)

I must admit that I've owned two Zs an early 2003 and a 2007 Coupe, loved both and the "M" is the natural progression.

Boxsters are nice but always say to me "can't afford a 911"............possibly unfair but that's what they say to me :fuelfire:

Not sure about the SLK, the AMG55 is cool but most people will just see the "normal" model and not the AMG bit maybe ?

I have been looking for ages and watched loads of Youtube vids. look awesome and sound incredible. Bargain of the century and very underated. Great for those than know and no known achilles heal like the rest you have mentioned.

I like them, lots of variation in prices but they must be a tough sell as most have been for sale for a while, that could be a good thing :D

That's the only thing that has held me back. Resale. You have to buy one and expect to keep it at least a year- or buy very wisely so that it is tempting enough to sell on. Some tests have shown 0-60 in 4.2secs! Engines seem bullet proof... What's not to like - those that say 'hairdressers' are ignorant to be fair.

The same is true of most of these types of cars in my opinion.......the Z4MR doesn't seem to sell easily and my experiences of M3s would also back this up !

The exception to the rules are as you've already pointed out, you need to own either the best one available or the cheapest lol :fuelfire:

Well that's probably just as true of a Z4M - most people will simply see a Z4! But then if you don't care what people think that shouldn't be a problem. :)

I never even considered an SLK - manual Mercs are about as rare as rocking horse poo. But I can see the appeal of the AMG just for the sound-track!
