On the spur of the moment, I have booked a day on Oulton Parks low grip circuit for a day of sideways action.

Anyone fancy joining?

Well, just got home after a day of sun, wind, rain & wet lappage.

Just a few things to point out about low-grip tracks and drift training:
  • Don't leave your window open when you're going sideways, as anything the front wheel throws up will go straight into your face or splatter the cabin
  • You will do 10mpg - or 100 miles before requiring a refill
  • Your car will get dirty - the passenger side more so

I think you will need the 10 bucket method to clean your car :poke:

Looks like you had fun

Shame I had to work today ive wanted to do one for a while

It was lots of fun, had too many spins to count, but it was my first ever proper drift training.

Full day was probably a bit much for me though - and I've since found out they do a PM session (usually 2pm-5pm) for £60. Which might mean I can still work/get paid for the Friday but get off early and do an afternoon session.

Realised how much easier the M5 is to drive than the Z4, but even the instructor commented on how snappy the car was.

I didn't capture any other pictures/video, but I know a couple of people there had GoPros on, so I'm hoping some footage will appear on YouTube - although the gap between cars and the meandering of the circuits (2 to choose from/swap between) probably means I won't be in shot in any of them.

One guy in an old Mercedes 190E (or similar) was black flagged as his exhaust was hanging off. 5 minutes later he's back WITH NO EXHAUST at all. Less than 1 lap later and he was black flagged again. It sounded like a Spitfire! Driver was very good at going sideways though.

THAT amount of dirt looks like it was great fun - it's almost an art car... I'd love to try this, but I am not sure an auto would do the business :?

Off-topic, but aerofoil on the passenger wiper too = great idea, why did I not think of that :slaphead:

There was one guy in an auto and he seemed to be doing okay.

A wiper on the side window - aerofoiled or not - would have helped.

Looks like a lot of fun!

I would be weary of the excess wear on clutch tho!

How were the tires before and after ? I presume mega wear after 100 miles of sideways action!!!

Not really as you're in 2nd gear almost immediately and only use the throttle to initiate the slide. Of course you could rev & then dump the clutch instead, but that would probably knacker it considering the CDV would get in the way of that.

Used about 1mm, as the track is low-grip and is watered every 30 minutes or so.

The biggest problem is getting back on the track if you go off, as there's a fair bit of drop between the tarmac and grass in some places.

Not my video, but from the same event, and it shows how slippy it really was.

Looks great fun, makes me want to watch Tokyo drift. What ended up all over the car then ... Is it just mud from people running off track and bringing it back on or do they sort of grease the track?

I had a day with the whole of Oulton park between 4 of us years ago and did the slippy surface in the escort cosworth RWD rally cars with locked rear diffs!

Mega fun   :driving:

It's a combination of muck you kick up from going off the track, and the water/muck you kick up from the track itself.

They water it regularly to make it as slippy as possible, but the surface is a low grip one in the first place, so even when it's dry it is slippy.

Anyone wants to try one then they're on regularly throughout the season - usually on a Friday though (although the October one is on a Saturday).

Here's a couple more videos (again, not mine) from the day.
