slightly rattly almost pinking ?

hi all,

im after a tad of advice ive had a 2.2i se roadster 2005 for the last 2 years and every summer (when the weather is good egnough to have the top down and the stereo off) ive notice that the car makes a little bit of a pinking noise not all the time not at high revs and not sticking my foot hard down in a high gear. its every now and then when i accelerate in the mid band say 2500rpm to 3500rpm it lets out a couple of what sound like pinks then goes fine. The car has just reached 33000 and ive heard people talking of the vanos units requiring changing at 30000 so wondered how you could tell that the vanos was going.

does anyone have any suggestions ive tried running super unleaded and normal and it makes no difference.

oil wise im running 5w30 castrol edge and changing religiosly every 8000miles

any ideas

3.0si pinks also even with v power, dealer has no idea why and even less enthusiasm to know.

is it a comon problem then

surely pinking is pre detonation so not brilliant for an engine

if you look on the forum there seems to be a number of z4s suffering pinking and with different engines, i rather think they are set up to run lean to get the most mpg, not good for the engine though
