Slightly Odd Handbrake issues

Most times when I apply the hadbrake there are no problems. Comes on and holds the car on quite a steep driveway.

Occasionally though a problem occures. The handbrake seems to miss the ratchet and feels as though something has become detached and the leaver comes up much highrer and it dosent feel as though the brakes are on at all. BUT if I then let the handbrake fully down and re-appply it it works exactly as it should.

Its most odd and there dosent seem any pattern to the malfunction. So I'm searching for ideas please

Seems to be quite a common problem (which I think is appearing on mine ), but easy fixed. Hope this helps

same thing happens on mine.

sometimes i've pulled it up at a set of lights and it comes up so fast that it feels like i've broken something.

Yup, happens occasionally to me too. not often or bad enough yet to investigate a fix though. mines an 03 with 90k so has been going a while.

I asked BMW to look at mine - they came back saying there was no problem...

I've owned 2 BMWs, both with shocking handbrakes.... BMW always investigate and fix, and by the time I've used it 3 times, it's useless again :headbang:

Not very helpful I'm afraid but this is my second BMW.

Both had shocking hand brakes. I just open the door and put my foot on the road Flintstones style. Much more effective

Again, not helpful but the same happens on both of mine... just noticed it this morning in the 5er. Very disconcerting!
