Slight 'whine' in 1st and 2nd?

Now i've owned the car a few weeks i've noticed that in 1st and 2nd gear the Zed has a slight whine from the engine bay? It seems much less noticeable when warm and undetectable in 3rd and above?

*Edit - it's also really notchy / tight and difficult to select certain gears but from reading on here they are very notch gearboxes anyway?*
Thoughts?

What engine is it? Mine does the same but has never got worse in the last 18 months of ownership.

The noise, I think it is still there in 3rd but gets drowned out by the engine noise/ road noise. It also increases with revs. Gearbox more notchy when cold but improves when warmed up.

Doesnt sound normal to me. Mine is notching but not difficult to select gears.

From stumbling upon another Z4 video on youtube it seems it could be a cracked intake boot making the noise?

Hi

New owner of Zed 3.0 and had it a few weeks. Cant comment on the noise element but the zed is deffo notchy. I found that with my zed you have to be sat correctly to get the gear change spot on. I dont mean to sound stupid, but i cant kick back in the zed, because if i do, i feel it in the gears. I also have to push the clutch down fully to get a smooth change especially 1st and 2nd.

The ZHP gear knob made a big difference in gear change and improved some of the notchy feeling

My Car is booked in at 8.30 in the morning for fresh fluids and CDV delete, so hopefully mine should feel better soon. If mine was under warranty, id be wipping it down to BMW to look at. Always safer than sorry

Cheers for the reply - yes the notchiness seems to be the norm from what i've read - I take it you don't have this noise on yours R3AP4R?

Speaking to a friend who's very mechanically clued up, he seems to think it's 'normal noise' - his R32 had the same at lower speeds apparently, something to do with the power being sent to the rear via the prop shaft.....

N1nja-frog, a bit more noise in the cabin is normal if you're coming from a FWD car; your friend is indeed correct. The gearstick is directly on top of the gearbox, so there is more direct transmission of noise, as well as it being much closer to you the driver.

Do you find there is an issue changing gears higher in the rpms? I'll confess I've not driven any other zeds than mine, but mine is a little notchy at low rpms too. howver once up in the rpms, it's silky smooth and a joy to change.

Cheers for the reply - much appreciated!

Yes I understand that, but this noise seems very prevalent? I'm unsure if it's a noise that was there when I test drove it or it's just now i've gotten used to the car....

Does yours make the same noise in low gears at low speeds / RPM?

I don't really drive it into higher RPM much at all in all honesty, but not encountered an issue yet!

I have the slight whine when in second and 1st and 2nd are definitely notchy when changing.

It just seems to be a characteristic of the car and nothing to worry about...well if it is...it hasn't broken in 10 months so I hope it's ok...

There is not a lot in a gearbox other than cogs and bearings ..............

Cogs that are not 100% matched and aligned will generate noise (Im talking micro measurements here) that's why some
gearboxes whine in low gears and some do not, its a question of how well they are put together.

Bearings on the other hand will whine for a while before they self destruct. Bearing failure in a manual gearbox is highly
unusual, they are in a self contained oil bath ............

Unless the whine is seriously loud or annoying, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
The only way for a dealer to properly check, is to remove the gearbox, open it up and inspect. A job with a high price tag
which if you are paying, you will want to avoid, and if they are paying they will definitely try to avoid. :D
