Slight buckle on ebay bought wheels

Well,

I knew it would be a little hit and miss, I bought a set of 4 split rims from ebay last week for £150 (not bad really). The seller assured me that there was no buckling, just a little corrosion as listed.

Anyway, today I was halfway towards Bradford to collect them when the seller called to say that they have just found a small buckle in one of the wheels. "Great" i thought...

Rather than turn around I pressed on, since I had already paid Via paypal. I arrived at the sellers, and they seemed like a nice family and he genuinely seemed annoyed at finding the buckle. All wheels seemed to be in pretty good condition (better than my current set). Apart from one front wheel which has a slight flat section on the outer rim.

I said to leave it with me, and that if there were any problems I would put a claim in via ebay etc.

So I now have to figure out what to do. I was quoted £50 a wheel for a refurb and paint if I split them myself. However I recall them saying that they would not touch them if they were buckled... so I am a little concerned about the best course of action. If it is just the one wheel then I hope it will not be that expensive to repair? I guess the first thing to do is get them all on a balancing machine.

Anyone else had to repair a buckled wheel? dont really want to return the set as I still think for £150 it was a good deal.

Kind regards

How do you know just one wheel is buckled - have you had them on a balancing machine or similar or a dila gauge? I ran aset of 108's for over a year only to find out later 3 were buckled.

What rims do you have now? 108's If so just use one of the old outers to match to your set

Finally buckled rims can certainly be fixed. My local guy does it as he took my last set off me to do just that and refurb them.

Sorry,

Yes it is more of a dent on the inner diameter. You are correct, I do not fully know whether it is just the one, that is why I intend to get them all to a refubishers and balanced/ checked etc.

If it is just the one, I will probably substitute one of my existing rims so that I can get a nice refurbished set. My long term plan was to get 2 x sets fully refurbished then sell one set on ebay to make a slight profit. (I imagine a set of 108's fully refurbed with warranty on the refurb) would fetch a reasonable amount?

The main priority is to get one set ready for my road trip in September.

Not sure what to do with regards to the seller... I mean in theory I could get a full refund, whether I try and get the cost of the straightening process off them vie ebay...

I know some people say to just use a soft hammer... but I dont think thats the orthodox way of doing things!

I would define a buckle as the wheel is not circular and a dent as a chip or piece of metal missing from the lip.

Buckles I've covered. Dents would need sanding out or metal welding in. Any decent refurber can do any of these.

Before doing anything I'd just take all 4 to your refurber and get him to spin them up see if they are all OK and get comments on any repairs needed. You could do it at home by just bolting one at a time onto a wheel hub and rotating it with a pointer held firmly close to but not touching the rim. You'll see in an instant if it's running true.

From there decide what to do
