SKYE MEET/RUN, 22nd/23RD AUGUST 2015.

Craig - Steph and I will book a hotel near the start point for the Friday night (any others doing that?) - any ideas of where we we'll all meet up yet?

We staying at Portree on the Sat night? It's likely to be busy, so the sooner we book up the better

(Nearly rang and booked Uig's room at the campsite for Sat then read through the route on the OP  :o )

UPDATE.....
After spending most of today and evening phoning visitscotland/b and b's/hotels and on websites galore...i cannot get any fkn decent and reasonably priced(ie circa £35-£45 per person per night) accomodation for anywhere in Portree or nearby for the Saturday night(August 22nd),
which means we either pay silly money for a room for the night/circa £180 per room OR i will look into getting somewhere in Fort William or wherever, on the way to Skye, then stay tere, and go onto Skye early Sunday morning.

Alternatively we scrap the idea of Skye and look at another run.

I did not think it would be such a problem to get somewhere to stay, and neither did the nice woman from the portree visitscotland office!!
As i/we have avoided the Highland games in Skye (4t/5th) and the Bank holiday w/end is te 29th/30th.

This would tend to show that the roads may well be a tad busy...but Bings excellent Skye trip was last August also, on the Holiday weekend, and some great driving was had :D :driving:

Let me know your thoughts folks, and i will keep at this all week....and update accordingly :x

BTW...Campsite is fine..Torvaig has 3acres and is only £8-£16 PER NIGHT, FOR THOSE WHO WANT IT...THO WILL NEED TO SORT OTHER ACCOMDTN FIRST BEFORE ANY1 BOOKS CAMPING, i would think, lol

What about heading up to Uig for the Sat night as we did last year - might there be accommodation there?

The campsite looked big enough.

:driving:

B&B rooms were limited though Paul - remember MetalLicker was a fair way away round the bay. Not sure about hotels, but it's probably a very good idea to be booking now.

I definitely won't be able to make it I'm afraid, I'll be starting a new job at the beginning of that week. However, we'll sort a north west run out sometime in the not too distant

Been looking at B&B's at Uig and most are booked that weekend including the one we stayed at last time (which was excellent) :?
Good luck with the new job Allan

Think a previous forum hoon stayed here - http://www.sligachan.co.uk/sligachan-hotel.php It's got camping and a hotel
Don't know if it has any rooms available for our dates yet :?

Have phoned so many b and b's etc, and searched alot online...i am currently unable to get any decent b n bs for the Satutrday night....so now looking at either paying £70+ per person/as opposed to £35-£45 per person...OR Look at staying in Fort William??

Let me know your toughts folks, and also if any1 has been able to book anything in Skye, anywhere...as i have tried Portree,Dunvegan,Broadford etc etc!! :headbang:

Let me know your thoughts, as i can try and get decent b n bs in Fort william if any1 wants to go there to stay then we can travel to Skye on Sunday morning, take in Portree/uig etc then head back down??

Let me know your opinions folks, as we will need to make a decision on this asap...and i dont really want to have to scrap this meet. Cheers

Craig.

I'm happy to pay a bit more for a room, but I'm a single occupant anyway, so don't know if those prices are per person or per room.

I'm also fine with staying further away and travelling to Skye in the morning,

We're happy to stay off the island at a b&b Saturday and travel around it Sunday - or - do the other route off Skye.

Another alternative - go a week later when the Scottish Schools are back (therefore more places to stay on Skye) - and I think, it's a bank holiday?

No need to scrap the run.

Also happy to go a different weekend if it helps!

Scottish schools back on the 18th Aug. Skye from Fort William and back is a doable run but obviously less time on the island. To balance that coming from Glasgow direction could take in Oban on the Saturday and then Fort Bill. If going and coming back from Skye the same day then come back via Contin, Inverness and Loch Ness, Fort William and then Glasgow or if time an issue then Inverness A9 to Glasgow.

Every road has its best bits and stop offs but I think time will be an issue if too any stops.

Hi all

Although I'm not attending this Skye meet I hope no-one minds me chipping in.

Yes some of us stayed at the Sligachan hotel before - nice spot, stunning views, small overpriced room ( circa £90 but hey they have a captive market with little competition). Also camped which was good fun & reasonable facilities - numerous viscous midges though and a wee bit of a faff for just one night - though we did breakfast at hotel.

I also think that driving to Skye and back in a day from e.g. Fort William might perhaps miss the point a little - you'll barely see Skye reducing the chances of catching decent weather, seeing the stunning views, early morning light etc. However, totally appreciate the position re accommodation - it's a popular place and can charge premium prices for fairly basic accom. and I know some of you have been to Skye before.

Not looking for sympathy here, but we recently paid over £170 for a night, B&B double room, in uber expensive Switzerland ( pre booked many weeks before) for mid range hotel, so adopting a balanced view of accom. v fuel costs etc. can be helpful. i.e. taking into account what some might be spending on such a long trip on fuel helps keep accom. costs in perspective

Have you looked at Applecross as an alternative though again accom. is probably even more limited ( other than an excellent camp site) though personally I still feel 1 night camping is a hassle.

Oddly I don't think we've driven down Loch Ness on a forum run though much of it it can often be mega busy with tourists. I also think a drive to Skye is made even better by the drive to Malaig ( the road to the isles) and over on the ferry but I know this adds yet more costs and ferries ain't cheap.

Hope this helps. Good luck anyway ! :driving:

I HAVE NOW BOOKED ACCOMODATION JUST 9MILES OUTSIDE PORTREE...IN A HOTEL THAT HAS 15 ROOMS OR MORE, I MANAGED TO BOOK AND PAID DEPOSITS FOR 6 DOUBLES AND 1 SINGLE ROOM.

IT IS THE 1 IN THE LINK THAT METALLICKER POSTED, THE SLIGACHAN HOTEL, which as Allan said, has been used by others (SEE JAX POST) in years gone by.
Its a nice enough place,if a tad more than we were wanting to pay.....its £70 PER PERSON PER NIGHT, as opposed to £40-50 per person per night i was looking at for b n b's/geusthouses...but we were running out of options tbh, and its also got a Campsite right next to it, which is the SLIGACHAN CAMPSITE, Phone number is 07786 435295, as i have been told there is no pre-booking available for this site....which is also the case for the TORVAIG CAMPSITE IN PORTREE ITSELF, no pre-booking allowed, just get there "mid to late afternoon and you should get on okay"!! Both owners of each site said they always have sufficient space for tents though as both are Large sites i am assured,so it shoudnt be a problem; i did say we had a few people coming from England and didn't want to risk no tent spaces but was told it wouldnt be a problem as long as we got there between mid and late afternoon/before 5 or 6pm, and I am planning on us all getting to Skye at about 3.30/4 pm aprox.

I am now looking for DEPOSITS for the HOTEL ACCOMODATION, to be paid to ME of £10 PER PERSON (I have paid Deposits for 13 people, i.e £130).....6 DOUBLES AND 1 SINGLE ROOM, which is the info i had from you all............the only person flying solo is Tony/mmm-five, so have booked it on this Basis folks :D

Please pay me Via PAYPAL as a Friend, so no charges on either side, thanks.
For those who don't already have my paypal info, pm me, cheers.

THE MEET IS ON :) :driving:

P.S,HOPE EVERY1 IS FINE WITH THIS HOTEL ETC.

Well done Craig - that'll be fine for Steph and I - will send you the deposit.

Thanks for sticking with it and sorting this out

Gutted that myself and Sue can't make this one

Just could not get baby sitters for this particular weekend, the week after would have been fine but thats the way it rolls 8) hopefully its so popular another one is not to far behind, i hope you guys all have a good one
