SKY Q

I'm tempted by this. As a long term customer for £50 I can get full installation, main box and a mini box for upstairs. An extra twelve notes a month but I can cope with that. I'm currently on the full HD package.

Does anyone have this, is it worth it and is it as good as it looks.

I had a look at it - seemed a reasonable deal for existing customers
What put me off was that currently we have multi-room (my son has a HD box in his room)
On the Q system all the recorded programs are on and controlled from the main box.

I have Sky Q and it's a big improvement on Sky HD + in my opinion. Much more focus on 'On Demand' and 'Catch Up' obviously trying to compete with the likes of Netflix and Amazon. You can record 4 channels while watching another (with the silver package), stream to your tablet as well as separate mini boxes around the house.

The picture is 1080p (the standard box only supports 1080i & 720p) so image quality is improved (though the majority of us probably wouldn't notice the difference tbh). And of course the silver box will support 4K so pretty damn future proof - Sky will be launching 4K in the summer.

The Sky Q user interface is very different and takes a little getting used to though feels very fluid once you get used to it. It's clearly not cheap so I would suggest having a play if you can before committing.

Yep, the mini boxes are all connected via wifi - anything recorded on the main Q box in your living room can be watched on the mini boxes around your house.

Yep, the mini boxes are all connected via wifi - anything recorded on the main Q box in your living room can be watched on the mini boxes around your house.

Couple of mates have it and think it's fab. I've got 4 kids and 2 rooms downstairs with sky boxes, so I'm looking at a main box and 5 (!) mini boxes... Ouch.

That's what puts me off with 4 HD boxes.. That, and the wireless in our house already having major speed issues with 20 odd devices connected..

I've just checked my sky and they want an extra £52 a month for Sky Q from me ! And £149 set up fee !

Yes I was told that £149 set up. Also I was told you have to have Sky broadband to have Q but that will change later, is it true

I've had it for a couple of months - best bit is having your on-demand content on any box, and all the boxes act as wi-fi repeaters. It does require a decent wi-fi signal from the main box but the installation should include boosters if required. I think there's a limit to how many mini boxes you can have (possibly only 2?) so with a big multi-room setup you might be better sticking with what you have currently.

WiFi speed or internet speed issues? If your WiFi is getting saturated then you could add another router just for TVs and PCs. If the WiFi is coping but it's bandwidth then set up another SSID and allocate a fixed amount of bandwidth to each.

I thought the topic was 'thoughts on Sky's latest offering Q' ....the idea that paying extra to pause live TV and then watch in another room seems utterly bizarre. I can't think of a single example where that would be useful? Whilst Sky is a lovely interface and product, it's simply an old format that is becoming more redundant as time goes by.

It makes for a flashy advert, but yeah I've never felt the need to pause a programme so I can keep watching it uninterrupted in another room - my flat is fairly small though so maybe it's more use in a big house or if the kids want to continue watching something as you go out.

I'd actually like this feature. Quite often me and the missus will be watching something downstairs, decided that we want to watch it upstairs. Would save me waiting for the adverts, running upstairs, turning TV on, turning the SKY box on, then finding the channel.

WiFi speed or internet speed issues? If your WiFi is getting saturated then you could add another router just for TVs and PCs. If the WiFi is coping but it's bandwidth then set up another SSID and allocate a fixed amount of bandwidth to each.

Am on all that, we have 2 separate networks, a 2.4ghz and a 5ghz, with different devices allocated to each, and bandwidth throttling by device. But a 10mb connection (no cable, and fibre a year away) doesn't go far between 4 HD boxes, 5 smartphones, 5 tablets, 3 laptops, 3 XBox ones, a PC and the streaming from CCTV in the shop!

Yeh, we do too (on the cheepo infrared link we have). Not a main feature but fine to have it available.
