The nexus 7 is a bit big as has alot of frame around the screen
But alot of work has gone into the rom to make it perfect for cars as you described

If I'd not got factory nav to butcher
I might have tried the nexus in the air vents
 
as mentioned, I already have a tablet installed, but the problem with it is two fold.. it has a lot of power draw, even on standby, meaning you battery will drain in approx 4 days of not using the car.
Either that, or it's turned of / unplugged when you're not using the car, meaning you cant do stuff like open the roof until you've powered it back up.
 
In other news, I have the interface built now, and it's all working.
I'm debugging issues with dab and music..
not long to go.
 
sk93 - how did you get on with building the PCB's? Looked like you were a bit wary of the process.
Really looking forward to seeing how this works out, but have just blown my money on a Dension 300, so will be hard to justify another gadget so soon... :roll: :lol:

Would sleepy pi be difficult to add if happy to pay for it
Have you been able to test on a car with factory nav to see what information is displayed,
 
On the interface for the skipi can you run the shutdown command from there as my zed is generally left from Sunday to following Saturday, an then have it out start the next time it sees ignition
Just throwing ideas around
 
I've not no.. factory satnav display would be an "after it's launched" approach I feel.. I don't have immediate access, and don't want to delay it looking into that (although I have spent SOME time looking into how to achieve it ;))

The interface does indeed have a shutdown option!
 
So big question, is the Pi Zero up to the job. I know the full blown Pi is cheap, but would be really fantastic if this could run it all for £6 :o

Been looking at various other "mainboard" options in comparison to the Pi.
Whilst the Pi is great in virtually every way, there's still an issue with it taking ~8 seconds (at present) to boot up.
Whilst not a major issue, it does mean things like remote roof raise / lower won't work for 8 seconds if the car has gone to "sleep" (eg, been left alone for about 15-20 minutes).
You'd have to press unlock, wait about 8 seconds, then you'd be able to do it.

I've got to shutdown / reboot the Pi as the IBUS goes down for power reasons.. I reckon with everything on it, it'll be drawing about 1amp of power at full tilt, meaning it'd drain a standard z4 battery in ~70 hours if it wasn't being charged.
Not a problem for daily drivers, but becomes one if you leave it for a few days for whatever reason.

So, some of the options:

Arduino
These boards will boot instantly, meaning there'd be no delay.
However, they're not "fast" processor wise, don't have a native sound card, and can't be "threaded".
All of these negatives can be combated however.

netuino
Again, boots instantly, with the bonus of running the .net micro framework (my "native" language)
Again however, it's still not a powerful processor, doesn't have a native sound card, but CAN be threaded very easily.

FEZ
instant boot, runs .net micro fw, and has a soundcard
However, it's expensive in comparison to all the others.


I think I'm going to get one of each board, replicate the basics on all of them, and see if I can find a winner.
If anyone has experience with the boards, specifically around the negatives mentioned, or anything else I've missed, let me know :thumbsup:


I've also created my own IBUS interface now, so can cut out the expensive resler interface (mine costs about £1.13, as apposed to around £20)

Also, still looking for a wiring diagram for the central console if anyone can help with that.

Finally.. thinking about starting this as a kickstarter / indiegogo project.... thoughts?

i've sent him a couple of messages on fb but he's not replied
 
Spoke with Ian today and he said he hasn't had chance since Christmas to do any more on it, likely to be a summer project.
 
After reading through this thread I've gone to look up the Raspberry Pi and found they have released a Raspberry Pi 3.

The Pi 3 seems to be only be a couple of quid more than than the Pi 2 but it includes bluetooth and wi-fi, saving the purchase of seperate USB devices for these and obviously a couple of quid. As far as I can tell so far the power usage of the Pi 3 is pretty much the same as the Pi 2. 8)
