Afternoon everybody

Hope you are all surfing the lockdown without loosing your minds.

I have decided to build myself a new music library for the Z, but since I am restricted to USB drives only, I will need to download the music in MP3 format.

Now it has been many years since I have had to do this, and previously used sites such as limewire

What are the recommendations for sites to downloads high quality music from. I have no issue with paying for the downloads, but struggling to find anywhere that seems legitimate.

Cheers in advance.

Can you convert to mp3 and download to usb from iTunes?
Once they're in iTunes you can right-click and 'Make MP3 version' - although some head units will play iTunes AAC (MP4) format anyway.

Have a Read of this

I don’t suppose the OEM professional head unit is one that will play them is it?

Just get yourself Spotify on your phone

I would love for it to be this simple, and I can assure you I have tried all options, but my car will not allow connection of my iPhone, iPod, iPad no matter what combination of cables I try.

Your 2013 car doesnt have an aux in, in the glove box or under the arm rest?

Yep, aux in and USB under the armrest, but I always get the cable not supported message in the head unit when I try. The only option that has worked is USB flash drive.

Hmm. Sometimes a cheap aux cable can cause problems. Have you tried a good quality one?

I have tried a different batch of Y cables, including a genuine BMW one. A selection of aux cables, and have even replaced the usb/aux module itself. Still nothing.

I have the exact same issue in the f30 3 series too. Somewhat annoying. Bluetooth calls work no problem at all in both vehicles, just no audio connectivity either through BT or Hardwired.

Pretty disappointed really as a 2010 Ford S Max I had worked flawlessly on both BT and hardwired audio. Not sure why BMW have to make things so difficult.

Interested in your solution.
I like to download and own music on my phone/car/nas drive. Don't want to rely on low quality downloads or subscriptions.

I always found audio via aux in to be very bad quality, so avoided it.

My late 2009 Z4 won’t play music via Bluetooth but it works fine using a cable and the aux in socket. I don’t have a USB socket under the armrest. I’m using an iPhone 8 and iPhone XS.

Where do you as an end user go to on that site?

I had a similar (identical) problem with my 2016 - according to some sites it was possible to code it using Bimmercode (hint - it wasn't).

I found a local guy near me (East London/Essex Borders) - I contacted him with my chassis number so he could check whether it was possible (BMW had fitted a combox on some later model years but hadn't enabled it via the coding - probably to make more money). He used a laptop and half an hour later I had Bluetooth streaming from an android phone - might be worth ringing round some BMW coders
