I have lived in and around Southport all my life and so really wanted to get down to the beach today to see Sir Henrys Sunbeam Tiger in the flesh and join in the celebrations. In 1926 on Ainsdale Beach he broke the L.S.R setting a new record of 152mph. Unfortunately I have been confined to bed with the dreaded lurgy....sods law ! However his Tiger and another Sunbeam he drove will be on display in The Atkinson Centre, Lord St until Sunday and on Saturday there will be a parade of these and other vintage cars on Lord St. Hopefully I can get down and get some photos.

Wow 152MPH on sand and in that old banger of a car, very impressive, it must have been terrifying :o
Hope you feel better real soon

Cheers for posting this brought back many happy memories. :D My dad first taught me to drive on Ainsdale sands, back in the 70s. Blue 2 ltr Hillman Hunter, I tried my best but doubt I ever got it past 60 on the sand. Mum now lives just Across from the Fire Station at the end of Lord St.

Looking forward to some Photo's, when your feeling a bit less Lurg.

Driving north on the m6 this afternoon, spotted a few old timers being trailered south. Wonders what was going on and now I know

Cheers fellas. Feeling a bit better now and should be fine for the weekend. Hope to get into Southport and get some photos then. There was a report on the regional Granada news this evening about todays events. Managed to take this photo from my TV :
Wow...what a small world it is ! My Mum also still lives in Southport, in Crossens. I also learned to drive on the beach in '82 in my Mums Mini 850. I also remember in around '73-74 my Gran taking myself, my sister and cousin on the beach in Grandads Jag 3.4 MK II and 'thrilling' us all by doing huge donuts and burn-outs in the sand !!! Ahh those were the days !

Another learner driver on Ainsdale beach here :driving:
Grew up in Maghull so Southport was a local day out for us. I remember practicing on the beach but can't remember my dad's car at the time.

Time to set up the Exclusive Learned to Drive on Ainsdale beach club. :D

Sounds good. That's where I learned, circa 1972 or so.

Ainsdale beach was also my first live music festival (Steeleye Span, Fairport Convention)
