New brake pads all round
New number plates
Vibra technics engine mounts
New gearbox mounts
New clutch
H&R lowering springs
New top mounts
Piper cross air filter
Newly refurbed wheels
All new belts
Relocated roof motor

Working BT phone connection

Generally adored and loved!!!

Service History.

Running in service - June 06 @ 840m
Oil servicing:
Dec 07 @ 12070
Jan 08 purchased by previous owner @ 27684
Oct 08 @ 24702 plus ins1
Aug 09 @ 38228
Jun 10 @ 52788 plus ins2
Nov 11 @ 67196
Mar 13 @ 81033 plus ins1
Nov 17 @ 94219

As you can see there are a couple of gaps in the servicing, the previous owner apparently did have it serviced but by the mechanics at Williams F1 where he works.
Whilst I didn’t doubt this, I still took the precautionary measure of changing the rod bearings and having the valve clearances done when I purchased the car in June 18 @ 98k. All works were carried out at Autobahn in Halesowen who have full records and know the car well.

Good luck with the sale mate.

Thanks pal - I feel as though I may have a bit of a wait on my hands with the amount of M’s for sale at the moment.
I think the mileage may put folks off, even with the rod bearings having been replaced I think the over 100k curse may strike!! 😊

You should be alright as you’ve priced fairly.

What people need to take into consideration is that these engines are good for 300,000+ miles (if maintained correctly) and a car over 100,000 miles which has already had overhaul work would most probably work out cheaper and more problem free than a lower mileage car which has sat in someone’s garage for the past 5 years.

Weekend bump for my M roadster.

I’m wondering if it’s just the wrong time of year or if the car isn’t strong enough to warrant interest on the forum.

I haven't noticed the car for sale anywhere other than here Simon ?
Reading the ad i can't see any department that a potential buyer could knock you on so that leaves the mileage which imo isn't that crazy & is priced to reflect so i would try a 30day classified ad on Ebay (£20) & Pistonheads for 30 days (£13) .
Right now there are far more Mcoupes on the market than Mroadies , PH have none on their site :o & ebay only has 4/5 none of which are anything close to £10k .
Best advice would be 6/8 pics taken somewhere nice ( car park pics don't enhance the sale prospects of any car ) then start at £10750 & see what response you get . If it was me i would also thin out the wording & remove any references of the engine work other than stating its " had the bearing shells replaced as a matter of good maintenance at 100k " forum folks have a understanding of what the car needs , those looking on other sites for a summer fun car see pics of open engines & work done then scarper thinking its a moneypit :P

Mr Wilkes,

As always you offer sound, unbiased advice which, on this occasion, is greatly appreciated. I’ll look to add in the other sites and rework the ad. 👍

Hi Simon,

I have literally just entered the market for a Z4M, either a coupe or a roadster. I have yet to drive either but aim to next week. Is your Z4MR still for sale?

Could I ask where you are in the country? You state that you’ve had the rod bearing shells replaced? Should I be looking out for this work on all Z4M’s? Is there a certain mileage to have this done by?

Thanks,

SparkyZ

P.S. Please excuse any bad forum etiquette as this is my first time posting on a forum!!!

If you're new to the ZM market then there is loads of good content on here to help you with buying the right car. Defintely buy from a forum member, you'll get a car that's been looked after properly and serve you well. The rod bearings are a nice thing to have, and cost about a grand to do...but they're not super essential if the car has been looked after well. They're some great cars to pick from at the moment and Simon's one on this thread is a bargain given all the good work he's done on it.

Angelus666 thank you for your kind words, they are much appreciated.

Thank you for all those who showed an interest in the car and those who have positive comments, the car sold today to one very happy new owner.

There’s a history of bearing shell failure with the S54 engine, albeit seen more often with the E46 M3 than the Z4M. The consequences of spinning a bearing usually are catastrophic resulting in a need to rebuild or even replace the engine. As such, replacing the shells as preventative maintenance is a good idea.
I swapped mine at 50k miles and they looked fine, others have changed them at around 100k miles and seen severe wear that likely would have resulted in failure sooner rather than later. I’ll change mine again at 100k miles simply because my Zed sees more track than road miles.
Another point to consider is cam follower wear which can result in damage to the cam lobes, again necessitating major engine work. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern as to which cars are affected, but rigorous adherence to the service schedule must be important since the followers are ‘gapped’ at each inspection service. The likely weak point is the case hardening of the follower. Once this has worn away, the surface of the cam lobe will rapidly abrade. Schrick sell OEM followers with an aftermarket coating that seems more durable and should lessen the chances of the surface wearing through.
Other than these potential problems, the S54 is remarkably reliable for such a highly strung engine and the Z4M has few major problems that can’t be avoided with regular servicing and preventative maintenance.
