Not looking for anything too fancy, just mechanically sound! I'm a student so can't afford to be picky, but interested to see what I could get, if anything, for £3k. It would have to be an automatic gearbox I'm afraid (yes, I'm *that* guy who learnt in one)

Rest assured it would be the most treasured and loved vehicle ever, I've had a poster of the Z4 on my wall since '05 :D

You should be able to find a reasonable 2.5 for your money, but a 3.0 is more likely to be a bit decrepit or need some work at that price. Don’t dismiss the 2.2 which also has the 6-cyl M54 engine.

There are plenty of people looking for autos, just because they like them, and the Z4 autobox is quite highly thought. Price wise I don’t think there will be much of a difference.

I've been watching the market for an auto 3.0 for a while now and prices have increased quite a bit. This has lead me to consider 2.5s, but they are at the price 3.0s were a couple of months ago. I think you'll struggle to find one for £3K. Maybe £4k if you're not looking for heated seats.

Sold my 2004 3.0i SE on ebay 2 weeks ago for £3,225 - was listed on here but no interest at all.

Good luck with the search.

Skmattwell, I understand the need for an Auto , however, never to late to learn to drive a Stick. I have been driving a stick for 40+ years. The only draw back is in bumper to bumper traffic. But in my mind that is a minor issue compared to the joy of a stick. Must confess I do have an auto a Nissian Maxima ex wife owned it and didn't want it so I have it. But my other car is a VW Jetta Wolfsburg stick. Anyway get what you are comfortable with and can get quality for the $$ you have to spend. Welcome to the forum and good luck with search and as always post picture once you find one. Oh one more thing the added plus of a stick is you can always Roll start it if get stuck ie batter died etc. (if you don't know a roll start is - get the car rolling with clutch in put in 1st then when rolling "pop" the clutch car will start) Got me out of many situations. Good Hunting!!!

Bought my wife a 2003 2.5i Auto just over a year ago.
It had 98k on the clock (of yer proper English miles  ) and came with heated seats but no Satnav.
I got it from a forum member and it had obviously been looked after pretty well. I gave £2600 for it, safe in the knowledge that if the missus didn't like her Valentine's present I could get my money back easily.
Since then I've had the front wishbones and lollipop bushes changed, overhauled the DISA and the VANOS, fitted new front calipers, discs and pads. (and increased it's width by about 5mm with all the wax I've lathered on to it during lockdown  .)
The missus loves it! In fact only this morning she was cruising off to the local town in it, roofless in the snow!!

Whilst a 3.0 is the dream for a lot of people, the 2.5 sounds just as good, goes pretty well and looks the part.
I'd definitely recommend one.

Thanks everyone, yes it seems prices are creeping up now, so want to get in there before the opportunity is gone! Will learn how to drive a stick one day when I move out of London, where you never leave 2nd gear anyway!
