Silly Brake Pad Question

Hi everyone

I won't go in to too much detail now but I've been having a bit of brake vibration. Discs and pads are relatively new. When I inspected the pads and discs there is a little bit of scoring on a couple of the discs and the edge of the pad is touching the disc when the brakes aren't pressed.

So the question is, is it normal for the inner edge of the pad to be touching the disc at all times? I would have thought that there should be a bit of clearance but I'm about technical as a rocking horse.

The pad should be lightly touching the disc but not enough to bind the brakes and stop the wheel from turning.
If there was too much of a gap there would be lots of play in your brake pedal before your brakes worked.

Cheers so that's probably all fine then, apart from my brakes vibrating. Only some 4K miles on them
 
Are you talking you about a "lip". Pads and discs can never be an exact match. Usually the disc is larger than the wear surface of the pad and a lip will form on the very edge of the disc. Some people machine this off when fitting new pads but discs are cheap so usually both are replaced.

No its not the lip, there maybe nothing wrong with how the breaks have been set up. I had a look as they were vibrating and I was just trying to find out if there was anything obvious that could be wrong with them
 
Sounds like you're still wearing the pad into the disc. The pad doesn't sit parallel to the disc very well in single piston floating calipers so it takes a while for the pads to wear at an angle to then fully mate with the disc.
