Side repeaters

Have got new badges for my side indicators / repeaters (I think I have read them called that) and want to know how to remove them.

I know some folk give them a trim but I just want to change the badges which look a bit tatty in places.

I also have a little bit of wear on my boot badge but after reading about this I can live with it! For a bit anyway!

Any help received with thanks.

The side repeater units come off the car body with a twist. The badges are glued on, with two locating pins. You can remove them with some fishing twine or a thin, plastic card- just be careful when you remove them you need to know which way is "up" for the replacement badges. I used double-sided tape to reattach the new badges.

Do they twist the normal way?
Counter clock to undo? :?

My replacement badge have pins on them as well so should be okay along with so e tape as you suggest.

Thanks, really don't want to force anything

I have a picture of the wing which shows the socket (not the best angle, unfortunately) and slots. IIRC it was a twist anti-clockwise to remove - there are slots that you need to line up with to pull the unit out. The unit may be a bit stiff as its held in with a rubber band around the base - a squirt of washing up liquid or WD40 will assist removal. The lighting cable is connected with a simple push fit with a holding clip:

I replaced my side badges the glue there held with is very strong I just sat them in super hot water so they came off really easy. As for the boot badge I replaced mine with no issues

Just did both sides in 20mins and is as described in Perrys post. Anticlockwise twist off. Do not worry about applying too much pressure as the clear unit is a sealed cylinder and so is very strong. I wouldn't say you need to spray anything to lube but defo do not use WD40 as this will harm your paint. The hot water to loosen the glue after the light unit has been twisted off is a very good one and then I got a small electrical screwdriver under the bottom edge and it came off really easy. I had fishing line at the ready but didn't need it. The badge you need is 82mm and doesn't have any pins as the pins are on the clear cylinder so I had to cut my badge pins off and secured with Mammoth double sided tape but any glue would have been fine as well. The hollow back of the badge means thy you can build up the layers in the middle of the badge to get a good fix.

Hope this helps someone

Question for Tom or anyone else.

You mentioned above that you had changed your boot badge. Having done the side badges and had a look at the boot badge I think that the boot badge will come off easily as you have said.

What I wanted to ask was did the badge for the boot need pins or where the pins on the boot lock as was the system used on the side indicators.

Can you remember or even better a picture?

Thanks in advance

Pins are the same for the boot badge. Also, it's an 82mm roundel (same as side repeaters). Easy to remove - I used a plastic card to get behind the badge and gently lever forward - there are two locating pins, and there are rubber grommets to grip the pins in the recesses. You can just reuse the existing grommets.

Oh - and just to add, all the above is correct for E85 roadsters; coupe's have a different boot badge setup as its used for the boot release.

I need to get confirmation for the coupe then. It looks as if it would come off in the same way. No pressure on the badge through use to loosen it from the back lock only compression and think it would change ok.

Try PM'ing Kermit1970, he posted on this thread that he'd replaced his...

anyone replaced there side indicators with carbon look alike ones, if so where do you get them, replacing all the other ones with these and looks good but carnt find side ones, ?????

I can confirm that the side and boot are 82mm with the bonnet being smaller. Probably 73mm but haven't measured it.

Just got my boot badge from BMW and it cost £28!! Will be changing at the weekend and that will be all the badges done.
