SI Questions

Hi All,

This is my first post - i'm new to the forum, but have been reading for a while now. I'm thinking of buying a Z4, and i think i've settled on the SI model - either the 2.5si or the 3.0si - doesn't seem to be too much between them, and they both look good engines on paper.

I'd be really gratefull if anyone with either engine could give me a quick opinion:

reliability
power
economy etc

What specifically to look for. My pot of cash is just about 8k which would get me a higher milage example, but i'm hoping to save a bit more and get a good one in a month or two.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum, the Forum FAQ will give you a good overview.

HVA issue seems to be a common fault, so might be worth checking if it's been repaired under warranty. Less likely to be an issue if the car has been driven daily - which as you mentioned higher mileage examples, is more likely.

The other thing to consider is whether you want SE or Sport trim level. Sport is better spec'd and so carries a premium. If you can live without Sport seats and sports suspension, the SE model might be better for you.

Good luck

Hi- I'm very happy with my 2.5- I think theres only a little in the top end and 0-60 between this and the 3.00 but I find it a good balance of performance and econony - insurance and fuel-(fuel economy is better than I expected actually). I'm pretty sure you will be happy with either- the 6 cylinder engines seem pretty 'bomb-proof' IMO.
Good luck with your purchase!

Hi
Same here, love my 2.5si. It is fast and the acceleration is brilliant...
Question will be the trim. I have the sport and to be honest it can be quite stiff for London's lousy roads. That said, on smooth windy roads she is brilliant!!
Good luck!

If you can find my old 2.5si you wont have any HVA issues as BMW changed the head.

Go for a sport over SE and day of the week, no issues over any other Z4 except the HVA problem.

Happy hunting.

67k and it's not missed a beat, was my daily doing 25k a year in averaging 400 miles to a tank now only use it 2-3 days a week, 5k a year and still no issues with HVAs. Love it

Another thing you may want to check out in the service history are any issues with the roof mech. If you've been loitering a while here you'll have seen that sometimes these can be problematic either through worn or saturated motors.

Oh and of course the springs but you'll also know that via the handy link at the top of the page provised by Adamski

Good luck!

Hi everyone,

Thanks - that's great info, some food for thought - i'd not considered the trim level to be honest, but i dont think i'll mind either way. Is it just the seats & suspension you get extra in the sport?

Will be thoroughly checking the car before i do buy - roof, engine noises etc. Fuzzball thanks for the feedback on the acceleration - i didn't doubt the 2.5si wasn't fast ;) Will buy on year / condition / milage i think

No you also get 18 inch MV2 alloy M Sport wheels and M Sport steering wheel as part of the 'Sport' package.

I think the Sport wheel upgrade is to staggered wheel sizes - so 8j on the front and 8.5j on the rears (225 tyres front, 255 rear) - MV2s were one of the choices, but I have 108s 5 (spoke split rims) on mine.

Good luck with your search

MV2's were standard on 'Sport' models and your 108's were an optional extra costing £275 more at 2006 prices according to the brochure that I have.

Ah, I see. I don't have the brochures... Just good taste :D
