Should the 2.0i vibrate at idle?

Hi there,

Question from a new guy:

Should a 2.0 2007 Z4 normally transmit a gentle vibration through the cabin at idle?
I'm about to lay down the money and I don't think there's anything wrong with the car, but I just wanted to ask owners of the 4 cylinder if this sounds normal.

It's not strong or uncomfortable, but you can feel it in the seat and you can see that the gearstick is gently but visibly vibrating. Nothing chronic. But noticeable.

Does your car do the same?

I suspect the 6 cylinder engines run smoother, so I'm specifically interested in feedback from people with the 2.0i.

I have this same problem but recently EML light came on and since gone out which I suspect one of the coils has gone this maybe the cause for my engine vibrating the way it does. But before that it generally did.
 
I've got a vibrating gear knob too. It's been there since 1300 miles and hasn't got any worse in 25k miles. I asked the head mechanic at the dealership I bought it from and he thinks it was specifically added to give the in cabin feel of a big v8. No idea if he's full of s#!t but I quite like it.
 
No....... nothing vibrates in mine when it's idling, and mine's coming up to 94k I think that mechanic is full of sh*t.
 
I notice it slightly on my gear knob, it is barely there since converting to just v power now.

I don't know about "vibrate"
But they all have a slight intermittent variation at idle if that's what you mean?
 
If the engine idles smoothly then I'd say you are OK.

Recently had a poor idle when stationary that turned out to be faulty coil packs (fairly common fault) and a failed tensioner on timing chain (not common and expensive to repair). The dodgy idle caused gear stick to vibrate when the revs dropped off.

No, not variation. I'm talking about a physical feeling of the vibration of the engine present in the cabin at idle revs.

It's not violent. It's not unpleasant, even. But its there, and I'm not sure whether its normal. I don't think I've ever been aware of the vibration of the engine in any other car. Noise certainly. But not vibration in the cabin.

So when your sat at some lights in neutral your gearknob doesn't move side to side a couple of mm's at low frequency?

I shall check on the stop-start journey to work today.
 
My 2.0i was rougher at tick over than at normal running revs where it was as smooth if not smoother than any other 4 cylinder car I've owned.

When reading through the Forum the rough idle of the 2.0 litre was often commented upon and I found it felt like the car was not fully warmed up when at idle - like it needed a little choke to smooth it out but it was the norm and never caused problems.
