Should I?

I'm pondering about a Z4M...

Currently I drive a 12 year old Audi Cabriolet, and I've test driven a new 325d vert and 120d vert as a replacement.

However... Me and my wife currently don't need a rear seat... And I am pondering driving a Z4 before we actually need a rear seat...

So what's are the issues then?
+ The Z4M I'm considering is owned by BMW, and never registered so it would be sold with full 2 year "new car guarantee"
- The Audi vert just got an expensive service, which was about half of it's current market price, but would now run fine for ~60000km...
- The Z4M is a tad expensive, although the price is right

I feel stupid for buying a ragtop while my current ragtop is still driveable, more economic on gas and roomier. I mainly commute, but would like to get back to driving more outside of my daily commute, and would use the Z4M for trackdays too. And the last issue is that I would consider keeping the Audi for my wife, but we only have one garage and I would feel bad leaving either outside in the rain.

So, should I suck it up and leave the 12 year old Audi in the open while having more fun in a Z4M, or should I just keep the Audi another year and get me a new very expensive 325d, which is barely trackworthy but big in luxury?

Maybe you guys have some insights if a Z4M would bring me a bigger smile to my face than an Audi vert, while keeping my license :)

Z4m is a car to buy with your heart not your head :) It would become expensive to service after a couple of years and you can expect 26MPG at best mixed driving.
Up side is that it would put a big smile on your face and you would be owning and driving a genuine 'M' car. Not sure it's ideal if you want to keep your license though! :driving:

Ah, but there is the issue... My heart's sold on the Z4M (as an excuse to drop the future 325d for an M3) and financially I can cope with the running costs. But it is not a rational car. My head said to my heart to get a Ford Focus, and now they are not on speaking terms anymore... :)

My //M makes me smile evily every time I look at it, and that's even before i turn the key. It's like we both know this secret, that no one without a Z4M will ever understand.

*that* is worth the price of the running costs alone.. you driven one yet ? that could be your final deciding point... ;) :driving:

I've driven a 2.0, which already tipped the scale in favour of a Z4. Now there is the chance to get a recent M at a decent price, and having been in a limited run of only 2 years.

I should actually do it, since postponing it until mid 2009 will have an effect on the prices, the new Z4 will be out and by then the family situation might be changing. Getting it now guarantees at least a year of fun, and at the earliest selling it when the new Z4M is not out yet...

My friend at the dealer did warn me tho: once you go M, there's no way back... :D

The Audi's back and is much better than before. Sure, 90bhp is no match to the Z4M, but... The biggest issue is that one of the two ragtops would be sleeping outside, and I'm not in big favor of that... :)

Why do you not want to keep the audi outside? You need to go take out an M. If the 2.0 sold you on it then you wont leave the dealer without the M after testing it

car cover?

OK, I went to look at a certain Z4M with my wife, and she's sold too. Like she pointed out: I do like the Audi, but when I was driving my 3 series, I almost never drove the Audi because it wasn't that good. And with the Z4M, I would never consider the Audi again...

So I'll have to make some phone calls tomorrow... :)

My Z is garaged when home and always under car cover when parked for the day when I am at work, Only leave it uncovered for very short trips into store. Of course, the top is ALWAYS down.

I should!

The car is signed for and I expect delivery in november. A 1996 demo (one owner: BMW) Z4M in Interlagos blue with black/carbon leather interior.

Congrats on the Z4M you made the right choice  as JAZ667 said why you worried about leaving a soft top outside is it likely to get vandalized thats the only worry i have leaving mine outside
