Should I stay or should I go?

Hi all

Times are changing, especially for me (Although I think myself lucky when reading and hearing all the awful business with regards to the current situation). After two months of recovering emergency major life-threatening surgery I have been given the OK to drive and return to work, suffice to say I need to visit the hospital on a regular basis.

I love my Zed but she is possibly the most difficult car to get in and out and now has the most uncomfortable ride for me, at 51 years old and prior to the medical issue I had no problem hopping in and out and enjoying its directness (Still felt and moved like a 30 year old last summer).

So, the question is do I let her go? She is like brand new, been 1k miles since Chandlers BMW in Brighton have rebuilt the engine and this thing is honestly wonderful but it is wasted on me. This lovely Zed needs driving and I simply can’t do that at present and am horrified to treat it as a glorified shopping trolley.

Just wanted to put it out there, all thoughts are welcome. :)

is there any chance of your condition improving to the point that its more comfortable to get in and out, and have a tolerable ride?

if not, then get rid. no point having a car sitting there unused because its uncomfortable, sell it and buy something comfortable to use.

Cars like a z4 highly situation dependent - people buy them when running a 2 seater, 2 door sports convertible is right for them, and sell when it it isnt - usually either when kids come along, or getting into and out of it gets increasingly difficult.

Firstly, glad you’re on the road to recovery

Is the condition causing the difficulty and discomfort likely to improve? I have a similar situation but my periods where the discomfort or reduced mobility, to the point it becomes restrictive, are few and far between thankfully.

I just don’t use mine at those times but will definitely keep mine as long as that continues

If it’s a longer term issue or something that you won’t get any respite from, very unfortunately probably time to let it go and get something better suited to your needs.

Ta Brillomaster, guess Im just reaching out and seriously appreciate your comment. I have 6 to 12 months before I can have surgery to get me to 100% and the Zed does get me to the hospital and back.... sometimes quick :driving: Still have the Kia for comfort if required. From a personal position I am hoping for support to keep it TBH otherwise it will go on sale for spring and fund my new office in the garden. :|

Thanks so much for the support to all of you, was feeling quite low. I love my Zed and just obviouly need to throw thoughs out there..

Boom, thanks Argyll Andy. ***Trying to explane this to the wife is futile***

I couldn’t use mine from mid December until this week because of surgery pre Xmas but it’s on a trickle charger so it doesn’t worry me. Took it out this week while on an essential journey, let it get up to temp then drove it properly

The smile was still on my face as I was reversing it into the driveway, that’s the thing I’d miss and I won’t let go of until absolutely necessary.

Oh, and maybe partly why I’ve now got an ex wife as I didn’t listen (according to her) so no need having to explain for me  and the new partner loves the Z4 so win win

Good to hear your on the mend which is the most important thing.

As for the car dilemma, sell, keep the money in the bank and if things change buy another then.

As others have said really. Its probably more around whats going to make you happy in the long term too. If you need the money then sell and get another [pr something else you’ve always wanted] when back to 30 year old match fitness. Or keep the car mothballed/occasional use until you get back to full strength.

Whatever you decide though, it comes back to what will make you most happy.

If you are pretty sure you will be comfortable to drive it within the next 12 months I would keep it,you will enjoy it all the more when you have recovered.

'Office Garden' or the Zed...thats a no brainer. One brings you joy and excitement, the other is to work in.

Wow..! Well first and foremost good to read you’re on the mend despite needing further surgery...all the very best when it finally happens.

If finances are not top of the list then I’d keep the 35i until you’re back to full strength, then decide, especially as you have another car you can use. Until you’re 100% sure you may well regret selling. I totally get your thinking right now, but in time you will recover and may well wish you still had it. You’re only 51, this damn virus will be dealt with in time, you will have the surgery, and summer always comes around.... :D :driving:

Hi, glad you are on the mend.

Someone else on here a few weeks back was looking to buy back a car he sold 12 months ago, he regretted selling.

I would keep it for now and use occasionally when you can and if in 12 months its not feasible to use - then sell.

You have spent the money on the rebuild at least try and keep it for now to get the benefit of that, you may not get one as good in 12 months time

OGR

Really sorry to hear of your major health issue OP, but glad you are on the road to recovey.

I suppose there are a few factors that might affect your decision, like whether you can wait 6 to 12 months before you are able to jump into your Z4, whether having the money tied up is a problem, how attached to it you have become, etc.

And if your 35i is a manual finding a replacement may not be too easy.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Glad you’re on the mend, what ever you decide I wish you the best of luck

....if there’s the possibility of improvement in the future then I’d keep the zed :D

KEEP IT - it obviously means a lot to you and you coild make a very good recovery that will allow you to drive it 'properly' once again.
I think keeping it is also good froma psychological issue for you, knowing its there makes you happy and wishing you could get well enough to drive it again may actually help you in recovery.
Not a medical professional but all I see are positives in keeping it and negatives to selling it...
35i are becoming rare and hard to find, last time i did research on this it was around 240 odd cars registered in UK! will be some not registered but still a rare car now.
Get well soon chum, rooting for you

Never mind mate, at your age this issue will soon go away.

And there speaks the voice of experience :poke:

Keep the car for another year if you don't need money in the bank, it won't depreciate considerably in that time and if you make a good recovery you can find the nearest bucket of glee to rub your hands in and engage smug mode :D

Keep on mending - I’m another voice of keeping the car if you can.
If you ever want to laugh, come and see this old git getting in and out then wobbling off with his stick!

I do find it much easier to drop the roof tho.
