Should I get an inspection 2 done?

Hi all

Car is a 2003 with 47k on it. Last service was an oil, the one before an inspection 1. I know technically the inspection 2 isn't due till 60k ish, but the car is 11 years old and, to my knowledge, has never has a major service. Feels like it should be done, and doubt it'll do it any harm 8) but am I being overly cautious?

From memory the only extra things covered on Inspec 2 will be plugs and air filter. Next service is an inspection2 anyway so get it done when due or if you hit the 2 years.

Mines just had it's first a 9 years an 41k

That kind of miles & age i would give it the a full fat fettle & enjoy the reward .
All fluids,filters & plugs shouldn't be more than £250 at a decent indy ,
Prevention better than cure

Just had the first Inspection 2 done on my Zed at 66000 miles (according to the readout 2500 miles early  ) I can't believe how little servicing these Zed's have when you consider the performance. Amazing! I asked my local indy what the spark plugs were like that came out and he said they were in good condition - as far as I can see they are the original ones and this is the first time they've been changed   :o

They are designed this way and mine just keeps coming back for more and more. Though like you I was concerned that my Zed had not had a major service in 7 years!! I tried to get the main dealership I bought my Zed from to do at least an oil change when I bought it and they were adamant the Zed didn't need it and had 15000 miles to the next service. It had 3 services noted in the service book and they said this was correct. :o

Yep - I am amazed at how much performance is available day after day for such a long period without major tinkering and maintenance. Brilliant! :D

Forum members state that an oil change each year is the minimum - the dealership would not accept this when I bought the Zed and three stamps in the service book meant a full service history. Never had cause to regret my purchase (for either of my Zeds). I'm impressed yet still incredulous!

:driving:

Oil every two years as per service book unless you hit the mileage first. If I was doing more mile I might chsnge it myself inbetween services but I'm only doing 2k a year so just not worth it.

I recently did inspection 2 myself. Honestly it is a doddle. I've never had such an easy car to service. Changing the pollen filter was probably the hardest bit and that took about five minutes!

Nice one. Hopefully the loss in value of your car will be outweighed by the saving.

On a 12 year old car i wouldnt lose any sleep over any perceived loss of value, they are pretty cheap now after all.
when a car gets to this age sales go ahead based more on condition than a stamp in the book, a folder with reciepts for parts & details of work carried out would be welcomed as proof of care by most buyers in the market for an older car.

Mine will be due in 6 months or so but I think I'll go BMW.

Parts are about £100 to start with, and maybe a few hours labour, so all in I'll be down £200 say. But having FBMWSH is really useful on any age/mileage car. In fact I think on a higher mileage car I'd prefer FBMWSH because it suggests a level of car beyond worrying about a few hundred quid, which is what you want when buying a higher mileage car.

BUT, each to their own... I did my own servicing on much newer and lower mileage cars in the past. Why not.

I just think with a car like the Z4 there is some reassurance in the full BMW history.

That said I used independents and do DIY for everything else. Tomorrow is the gearbox and diff oil, and diff oil seals, at a local garage.

I can see your point Bradders but I keep receipts for all the oil and parts and document everything checked and done. Doing it myself I know that it's done and done right, little things like engine cover caps not being lost, everything torqued up properly, etc. It's as much about that as it is about saving money. I think any future prospective buyer of my car would see just how well it's been looked after by looking through my parts receipts and records of what's been done. Yes it's been serviced at home but it's been done over and above schedule and it's all documented. My car's twelve years old now so for me I don't see it affecting the value too much. I can see your point on say an 08 or 09 car for example though.

I can see both sides of the debate Tom. I wouldn't touch a home serviced car with a barge pole but many would and I'm sure yours is a great example. Like you say, it probably matters less as the cars age.
