Should I ditch the run flats?

Just wondering do those of you in the UK get flats tires that often. I have had my ///M almost 10 years and and have only had 2 tire issues and both were resolved quickly with an injection of tire sealant and later a proper mushroom plug.

The only puncture I've ever got where the wheel survived has been with an RFT tyre.

With a 35iS I found the combination of RFT tyres, cool conditions, wet roads, low quality road surface & loads of low rpm torque to be borderline dangerous. As for punctures I'd go with a string puncture repair kit & pump in the boot. You can get an electric pump & such a kit in the cubby hole behind the left hand rear wheel.

I agree, but equally it makes for a focussed and exciting drive. In those conditions you do need to be 'on it'. :D

With RS3 on tight corners with a very open surface you can provoke a bit of a wiggle in comfort mode with moderate levels of acceleration in a 35iS. However, on the same corners with the OE tyres you're talking about full opposite lock lunacy and playing with the throttle you can't 'catch' the road like in sports+ due to the intervention of the electronic 'aids'. :headband:

It's not like those focusing moments aren't there with the RS3 it's that the car is far more predictable.

Seriously though, depends if you have adaptive suspension or not and if you did get a flat how much of an inconvienience it would be for you trying to reinflate a tyre with crappy foam on a country lane in the pouring rain at night, if not then go for standard rubber.

I had Michelin Pilot Supersports on my M135i that I've just traded in and have ordered an M140i with runflats. Undoubtably standard tyres will improve your ride but I still like the idea of being able to carry on with your journey with runflats so long as you have adaptive suspension specced.

I did find the ride slightly intolerable on my old E89 with 18" runflats.

AA card & mobility kit..
Be interested to see you how the 140 with runflats is Tim. I had a M135 with runflats with adaptive suspension for a day when mine was getting serviced & compared to the M235 I had for a few days it was like night & day. Sharpness & ride quality was really Not what the 235 with mpss was ! Good luck

Me too :? I've had runflats on two previous 1 Series and found them tolerable but not so much on the Z4, probably as you're sitting over the rear axle. Another reason I've gone for Runflats on the M140i is because when new the MPSS are too sticky and with BMWs crappy paint you get lovely chips all over the place which on a new car is

I went from 18s with runflats on my E89 to 19s on non runflat & improved the ride , stance & looks
Recently member A1GGS also went the same way from 17s & no downside going to 19s with non runflats ...
I did and Andy speaks the truth. No contest. It remains amazing with the new rubber.

What about at trade in time ?
I'm told that if you trade in at a Bmw franchise that they take your wallet from you and kick you firmly in the goolies :(

Depends how attentive the sales exec is when doing the inspection. But in theory they take off the price of replacing all 4 tyres with RFTs, which is about £1500 on the 35iS.

There's a reason why I have my OE tyres & wheels in storage. Even going for cheap tyre places you're still looking at £650 for a set of new 18" tyres.

My plan is to buy a set on eBay if that time comes. But I'll almost certainly sell privately 'as is'

I thought I'd spend £20 now - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wheel-Tree-Motorcycle-Car-Wheel-Tyre-Track-Rim-Storage-Stand-Wheel-Rack-295mm-/281947824243?hash=item41a5666073:g:3ewAAOxyPKNTmABk then the person I sell it to has the option of what wheels/tyres they take.

Don't get me wrong I've found the performance of the MPSS great but when you roll a new car out the showroom I was constantly looking out for debris on the road, even on lovely smooth tarmac all I heard was stones bouncing around the wheel arches. I'm a little pensive speccing runflats on the new motor but hopefully all will be good :)

Could always do what I did an get non-RFT tyres and strong aftermarket wheels then bung your OE ones in storage :)

I nearly specced the M140i with the 19" Performance alloys but it would of added another 3K :o a bit pricey I thought. The 19s are a little cheaper from Germany so might go that route and get the tyres fitted seperately.

Even with the £ at the level it is now?

Will need to check again Ronk, last time I looked was before Brexit a few weeks back before I ordered the car.

There's been 15% (ish) fall in the £ v €
