Should I change 3.0si coupe for an m//coupe?

Like the bonnet idea bluestreak56,will start with an //m front bumper as I hate my foggy fogs!!! Then quad I think, and before all you lucky //m owners don't worrie I de-badged the car the day I got it & won't be putting //m badges on!! I just love the extra aggression the //m look has!

Z4C is the smart man's Z4MC...In my opinion to go from a Z4C to an M just would not make any sense, practically the same car with some upgrades.

It would not feel like you are getting a new car in replacement, if you were willing to spend the cash I'd be looking along the lines of a Cayman S as an alternative, similar performance and even lower running costs.

Lovely looking coupe  As I said, made more sense if you wanted a roadster. Good decision I think.

Disagree. Spend 4k on mods when the difference between the two cars can be had for 2K.

and I wouldn't swap my //M for a Cayman S. Not a chance.

I agree, not enough gains to justify the costs as for the porsche would not go near as had 911(996) which shares the same engine-cracked block-a known problem & cost me £8000 to replace!! They are so over rated, makes me mad just thinking of it :fightwall:

+1 buying the M is heart over head. If you have to worry about the costs then its not the car for you.

I find it funny that people buy the 3.0 say its better then make it like the M when at the end of the day the M would have cost about the same when the project is done!

As for running costs mine sits at 26mpg and i live in a rural area and see 32mpg out of it on long runs, then on A&B roads its a blast. The 3.0 is the sensible option and I tried one and its great but just didnt quite have the X factor. The M is a very special car.

Again wouldn't buy a Cayman, ever. Test drove one before the M with the chrono pack and everything, was great but just felt a bit boring in comparison to the M. IMO it also doesnt hold the badge reputation, it looks soft and everytime you bring it up people say ye its no 911. Although technically a better car it just again doesnt have the X factor. The stupid colours of the more x rated versions put me off too. They may be great but they haven't a great presence, would be a 911 CS. Think you would be lucky to find a good C4s for 28-30k will be a well used one or missing spec and one of the first versions wouldn't find anything more than a 56 plate for an 08 possibly 40k for a loved one.. Love the CS every time we go out in it i have such a massive cheshire cat grin, but I do like to remind my dad that mine cost half the amount and there is barely any difference in performance. Driving the CS is a great experience tho, just feels different. Love it.

It seems some people share your opinion:

My experience on sourcing and fitting M specific parts to my 3.0

£350 M front bumper inc painting and parts
£250 M rear bumper inc painting
£600 Quad conversion
£420 M alloys inc of new tyres

£1620 total

When I come to sell the Z I would recoup about 70% on selling the above parts, fitting my orginal parts in place. Previous 'for sale' posts with alike parts have been snapped up within minutes, in some cases at higher prices than above.

So at a rough guess the above M mods would have cost me around £500 - £600.

When you factor in the M running costs, expensive parts, servicing, warranty and the old paranoia it was a no brainier for me.

Also worth mentioning that I like many others like tinkering on our cars, more so the cosmetic side - something I wouldn't have been able to do on the M, well besides from adding the aero skirts.

However I'm sure the time will come when I move to a Z4M (coupe!) but I would want a garage queen and not a 60k miler.

Those prices seem like great value but you a bit of a wheeler dealer Ranski! Always seem to get amazing deals! Nice one

To be trueful the quad conversion cost me over £1000 as I had two done due to the 'longlife' one being droney

Sorry but your wrong, the parts arnt upgrades, they are just different.

The steering for example, it's completly different.

Fair enough, not everyone wants an M, but saying a 3.0 is the sensible mans choice is just wrong! The sensible mans choice would probably be a 318d or something like that.

Can't see why many people view a 2 seater as trying to be sensible! There are just different levels of thrills and expense.

And Brakes...

This is 'my experience' and what I have fitted

Besides, one isnt putting the M engine into the standard Z4 that would be stupid, sothe standard 3.0 brakes are more than ample for road use.

If you want to really breakdown M costs, then also factor in the premium fuel, which skews any MPG comparison and insurance

I tried an M before i got mine, and as i was coming from an s2000 i was tempted by one, however for most of my commutes and city driving the more lazy driving of the si suited me more.

The M really comes to its own in the fast back roads and around a track i guess.

Wow you did amazingly well there, much below my costs.

£250 m front inc bits + £100 undertray + £230 painting
£150 rear + £150 painting
£800 quad.

I got both my m front and rear bumpers from here... Took 2 years though

Alternatives are breakers... I gave up trying; and ebay.

same as aquazi , took me sometime to get the front and rear bumpers and used a spray shop in a crappy area called sparkhill in bham to get them sprayed, although they were ubber cheap and did a good job

aquazi - M undertray - good point, add another £80 to my front M bumper bill!
