Should I change 3.0si coupe for an m//coupe?

Hi,I have had my beutifull coupe for 3months & I do love it.still to make it the way I want will cost aprox £2000-2500 (mbumper, quad etc) and my friend said for that money I could change mine for an //M!! I do 8-10k a year as its my daily, really interested in your opinions as I'm in two minds, how much more is servicing & what mpg does the//m do? Cheers for your time. :driving:

Go try one.

I did, with cash ready, and walked away - not sufficiently different to the 3.0si to make it worthwhile the loss of boot space, extra thirst etc.

If you had a 2.0 however......

I'm thinking the same about my 3.0

But when I do the math with road tax, insurance, consumption and replacement items such as brakes and discs, I just think its not worth it (oh, did I not mention the paranoia warranty?)

I think I'm going to stick with the 3.0

Think Guiseley, is right, a test drive will tell you what you need to know. I've never driven the ///M so wouldnt know if the upgrade is worth it. I have (as Ranski has) done the maths, which doesnt add up for me... hence until I find the White ///M roadster I'm not thinking about it

Back in 2007 I when though exactly the same thought process as Ranski lists. However, I do 30k miles per year so petrol costs really stack up.

I didn;t get one and didn't really regret it. I just got better 3.0si etc etc.

However, at 10k miles per year, I don't really see that at a sreason not to roll with it.

Just be sure that you have the cash for any repair bill. Owning any car is a bit 'Russian roulet', but with an M, you have to accept that there are a couple more bullets loaded.

i would ask what you want from the car that you haven't already got ?
if its the look of the M as you describe then possibly for you it is better to switch for a car already as you would want it ?
if its for performance i doubt the difference is worth it
do you rag the car around as fast as possible on every outing ?
do you want to race everything you sit next to at the lights ?

no i doubt you do so for 99% of the time the extra performance will be surplus + you get caned on roadtax & extra fuel :o

but that's just a personal point as i would never want the M version due to the no autobox option :(
a real error from BMW there  majority of high end performance vehicles have a DSG/SMG/TIP/PDK or whatever alternative to manual .
maybe as suggested you should try before you buy ?

Makes more sense if you're going from roadster to coupe or visa versa. Reliability on the 'M's is fine but you always worry about the cost if it does go wrong.

Buying an 'M' is an emotional decison. You're buying it to own the best sporting BMW you can own. Those of us that have moved from standard Z4s to 'M's have few regrets. If you can afford it go for it!

I think if your doing 8-10k milers per year, inc.commuting, its maybe better sticking with a 3.0..as i have recently changed from 5yrs in a 2005 3.0i,and was happy with the 30mpg avg.but do just 7k miles /yr and NO COMMUTING.

I find the M (2008,low mileage example) quite thirsty...i was expecting 26 ish mpg,and 34mpg on longer runs(ie 4/5 mpg down on 3.0),but in reality i struggled to get 30ish mpg on long run,and only 24mpg avg.Means 2+ extra gallons of fuel per every 300mls/aprox

The extra costs are qt high, imho, but if you are prepared for it and can be happy witn that, then go for it.I had an o2/lamda sensor go faulty 2days after getting my M...£300 repair bill. £700 for insp1,as oppose to £260 for 3.0i/same main dealer(which i knew, but still qt a jump).

The extra performance is great, espcly the extra traction and the way it hunkers down/gripping where the 3.0i(even on eibachs),would lose grip at similar speeds, etc.
I still think the 3.0i/si models are the best all-rounders though...so upto your personal choice,i reckon.

I've been contemplating the same option changing from 3.0 to an M but I would only ever want a white coupe so I wasn't to bothered when there wasn't any about and now two have popped up in the space of a week. I still can't bring myself to take the plunge though due to the extra cost and wonder if it's actually that much better so at the minute I'm just thinking of keeping the 3.0 and buying a few bits to make it look how I want

Well thanks for all the advice guys, did not know how much more the servicing was!!(thankyou Craig 3.0) a pilot at work has an //M so will get to test in about an hrs time :D the more I think about it though as I have a wife & two young kids and am a cabin manager & not a pilot(no big bucks for us trolley dollys!) my 3.0 is really starting to make more sense.plus I love stratus grey & only 115 si made in this colour & no //M  will update when we have driven each others, thanks again guys,oh & taz don't worry I could not have anything but the coupe as a trolley dolly with a roadster will just light up works 'gaydar' :driving:A pic of my coupe

When I purchased my M, the dealer had an auto 3.0 and the M. Both same colour same options.
When I turned up, I was undecided and intended to test drive
both. I first drove the M and I was blown away. Besides my other car is a tiptronic and fancied the manual M experience.

Didn't bother with testing the other one although a great car, I know in myself I would have regretted it had I chosen the 3.0.

Running cost's? I have yet to be hit so don't know.
mpg? I'm not a high mileage owner.

Well, got to drive the //M and although it was great,I think I will keep the 3.0 I'm sure the //M is quicker on the track,on day to day driving there seems little in it,don't get me wrong with the revs up it really is quick & I love the rasp sound!! But the costs just don't add up,still thanks for all the advice,oh and my friend drove mine & said i would be mad to part with it!! Still I can plan more mods now

Lovely lookn coupe...the coupes really suit csl-style wheels

Looks a nice example, hold onto it and enjoy it :D

I loved my 3.0 roadster,and i'm loving my M rdstr..just find the servicing costs stupidly high/just for adjusting tappets/shims.
If i was needing mine as a daily driver i wouldnt have bought the M.
(prob just bought a cheap runabout/which im going to do anyway, for the winter, etc.)

Would only replace my M with a 911 OR something similar,as not much else comes close/pound for pound style n performance wise(a decent 08 911 Carrera 4s costs 28-30k,and is only slightly quicker than the M/4.8s to 62/and doesnt look that much more special than a good z4 :driving: :D

Your car does look stunning. The right choice is the car that best suits your needs

Mind you don't spend too much on mods as you'll be better off selling up and buying the real thing :poke:

Exactly the decision I came to when buying mine. I might get some aero skirts and an M bonnet at some point but I cant sniff at 265bhp!
