Should I buy?

Guys - new member here. Been after a Z for ages and finally decided to take the plunge. It'll be used, just something for a bit of roof-down fun. Test drove an 06 Z4 today (facelift - so roof motor should be protected). Couple of things came up with the dealer, but he was very open about them. Firstly, it's a. UK import (I live in Ireland) and I'm usually wary of imports, although in the country 5 years. More importantly, it's not the original engine. Dealer said they took it in running like a dog, decided it was a clean car, gave very little for it and had a replacement engine fitted. I'm guessing I should run a mile? Drove well on test drive, no lights on, roof operation smooth, steering clean, no pull under braking or when you release the wheel, but still, that replacement engine has me worried. What do you think guys? Or can I guess your collective answer? :wink: please save me from the TT ill buy if chicken out.

These engines are built like tanks, so to hear of one needing replacing sounds suspect to me. Personally, I'd rather wait a bit longer and find the right car than rush in on the first you see.
 
If it was a replacement I would doubt it was a new one. Wouldn't sit right with me, avoid and wait for a keeper :)
 
Thanks guys. Guessed as much. Everything I'd read had the mechanicals as rock solid, so I was surprised to hear about the replacement. I'll bide my time and wait for that keeper.

Just a quick one - I am right to think that the 06 facelift addressed the water ingress on the roof motor?

Nope I think they did change a few little things to try a fix it, but the problem is mainly with the roof drains. Make sure that they stay clear with regular maintenance and it's far less likely to cause any problems. Or keep it in a Garage and don't drive it in the rain. (In Ireland :lol: )

And if it goes wrong, it's not a huge issue (expensive, but not difficult) to sort, so to me, not a deal breaker.
 
Could have had really bad issues with the HVA's, that would make it sound terrible. If like mine wouldn't clear after 3-4 miles either.

With it being an 06 plate, which engine was in it?
The 2.0l are quite problematic which timing chain issues, oil leaks and few other things. the 6 cylinders are much more reliable.
Uk imports to Ireland are extremely common, i wouldn't let that put you off as folks get better value In the UK and its only a sort ferry hop to the emerald isle! However I don't know how provence checks work in Ireland, A HPI check over here would reveal if a car had a hidden history, but once you export I not sure what your options are.
