should i buy a hard top?

I had an MG TF with a hardtop - it improved the look (well it would, wouldn't it :D ) but all I did was take it off when I firrst got the car and it stood on it's stand until I sold the thing.

It's a good selling point, but apart from that I really wouldn't bother.
 
I've had my roadster for 4 years & I've had no water issues with the soft top.......and it lives outside in Irish weather !!.
 
My car sleeps in a garage and I only drive it in weekends, so don't really need a hardtop. But in winter with all that salt on the roads... a hardtop just might make sense. If it would be my daily, I would surely get a hardtop.
 
Hi.

I bought one second hand shortly when I bought my Z4 a couple of months back (wanted the coupe really but couldn't afford one!)

I bought it for two main reasons; to protect the canvas soft top during winter and secondly for looks.

It's not cheap as I also got mine professionally colour coded (got the roof spoiler insert done gloss black along with some other gloss black detailing and it looks great!)

Also seeing the Z4s with the hard tops on auto trader they tend to sell for a tad more, so yes in my opinion it is worth it.

It is supposed to improve the aerodynamics also bit I wouldn't say it reduces wind noise over the soft top. Other point is clean the inner rear screen before fitting as its a nightmare once its on!
 
If you don't have a garage you can't really have a hardtop as it's a huge thing to store. If you do have a garage you don't really need a hardtop as your car is well protected most of the time anyway.

At around £700 they are seriously overpriced. You can get a roof motor replaced for less.

I've previously owned a car with a hardtop and it was frustrating when I was out in the car and the weather turned out really nice but I couldn't enjoy top down motoring.

If I could get one in the right colour for say £300 then maybe I would be tempted but at £700 no way. :thumbsdown:
 
If I used mine every day or even at all during the winter I would get a ht

I had a ht for my 3 series and that went on when the winter wheels went on. Well worth the money if you use the car during the winter. I paid £550 for the ht and sold it 2 years later for £500. So £50 for 2 years use wasnt bad at all

Just remember you need somewhere to store it during the summer

What effect does weather have on a Soft top (but not to paintwork)??
It keeps being mentioned by hard top owners that they have it to protect the soft top?
Is there a massive car shaped Hard top that also covers the whole body work too, lol? :poke:

Well I agree, there's are pro's & cons to the hard top so I guess it's down to weather you like the look of it or not. You could argue its not needed if you have a garage. Mine come with a cover so I just stow it away in the shed.

With all 4 seasons in the UK I think it's worth having, 6 months on / 6 off

And it definately adds value, I doubt you'll get one for 300 though

I'm happy with mine, looks great on the maldives blue and its quite unique too..
