Some new cars with start stop need the ecu telling it has a new battery fitted as they have a battery monitor on the earth terminal.
AA patrols have the ability to do this with the new Bosch diagnostic equipment they carry, but it's nothing to worry about for us e85 / 86 owners. Not sure about 89's though? But only if they have SS.

Thanks that makes some sense, I guess so the ecu knows whether the battery has enough charge to cope with starting the car...
