Should BMW have called it the "M4"

Hi, i was comparing the differences between the 3.0si Coupe and the M Coupe this morning... in terms of prices, performance, parts (build) and spec etc...

A friend of mine has an M3 and i always have to listen to "how great the M3" is etc... - i don't particularly like it as i think it just "looks" like a 3 series BMW with the extra fins and exhausts... i know it is an excellent car in terms of performance etc but it just doesn't do it for me...

Then i was thinking should the M Coupe have been given it's own unique M badge... the "M4"

The main reason i feel it should have it's own unique M4 badge is because, i often hear "Look, there's one of those cars that you are looking for" and my reply is "No, that is a 3.0si not an M"... and their reply is "what's the difference... they are both the same", HOWEVER the same person(s) would spot and appreciate an M3 over a 3 series with no hesitation...

Or could someone argue that the M coupe is not that far ahead of it's baby brother to be given it's own unigue M4 badge...

Interested in hearing other peoples views on my theory, thanks for reading...
 
Who cares what other people think! I didn't buy my car for them. :)

People who care/know about cars will know what you have and what it's capable of. :thumbsup:
 
I don't know why the Called the Z4 M version the Z4M. Why not stick with M Roadster like they called the Z3 M version. After all, all new M versions of the 3 series are called M3's.

The Z3Ms are known as 'Z3M', 'Z3M Roadster', 'Z3M Coupe', 'Z Roadster' and 'Z Coupe'

The Z4Ms can follow a similar nomenclature, but if you say 'Z Roadster' or 'Z Coupe' you'll confuse people who think you're referring to the Z3 variant.

Anyway, the Z1 is the only one that should be allowed to be called 'Z Roadster'.
 
On the old websites the M versions were listed under M, not Z4. They don't have a Z4 badge , just a lonely M. In other words they do have their own niche ....

As for the M3, next time your pal starts tell him that quite a few of us have gone from M3's to the lowly Z4 ....because they look so much better. The M3 gets lost in the crowd , a good thing if you don't want police attention :D , but boring most of the time. :thumbsup:
 
BMW are likely to eventually use the 4 series for a new model based on a 3 series GT, in which case a M4 is a possibility (probably with a diesel engine :) ).

i think 'M' roadster would have been OK as said each M3 doesn't mention the model. so if they do ever make a 'new' e89 M what will it be called? Z4Msdrive??
 
If I remember right there was a plan for the last 3 series to be called 4 series instead so they wanted to keep the number clear . Can't really call it M coupe once the M6 was launched.

The important thing is how it goes rather than what it's called.
 
Their plan was to rename the 3-series Coupé and Convertible into 4-series (just like the bigger coupé/convertible is called 6-series). But that would've meant the M3 Coupé (and Convertible) should be called the M4...
Same thing with 1-series Coupé and Convertible (2-series). That would be great for the new "1-series M Coupé" or "1M" since they could call it M2 instead (M1 is taken as you all know).
Not sure why they decided not to go through with this. Maybe because of the M3 legacy...

Anyway... I want to see a Z2 Roadster/Coupé a la Lotus Elise/Exige :)
 
Well...

If you look at the BMW website there's a very very clear distinction of M as a seperate option, even under approved there's the choice of M "Roadster" \ "Coupe".

The whole Z number is only the chassis the car was based on. I quite like the fact that most people just think, "Oh, it's a Z4" then you depress right foot (any gear will do :)) and disappear.

All part of the "Q" factor. M cars need not look like an unsuccessful marriage of BMW and Demon Tweeks. IMHO :)
