Should a broken passenger window trigger the alarm?

Went to our local bluebell woods in Micheldever last night for a walk and to take some photographs. Was only gone for about 20 minutes, but came back to find the Z4's passenger side window smashed and my wife's handbag (which had been left in the footwell) stolen.

Major hassle - not only were all her credit cards in it, but also both our mobile phones and various other things. Fortunately there was a house about 1/4 mile away and they kindly let us use their phone to ring the police and BMW Emergency Services.

Obviously an opportunist theft - they left our TomTom which was on the windscreen, and didn't even open the glovebox (which had an iPod in it).

What only struck me this morning was that I never heard the alarm go off. We were never out of earshot of the car (it's quite a remote, peaceful area, which is why we like walking there), and we didn't go very far. Surely a smashed passenger window (sending glass all over the inside of the car) plus somebody leaning in to the footwell should have triggered the alarm???

And a reminder to everybody: when you park your car, no matter where, or for how short a time, put any valuables away in the boot where they can't be seen. I used to be fanatical about this, but have gotten lax recently and now have paid the price.

Sorry to hear about this.

I have to say though... no matter how long you plan to be away, I'm not sure what you/she were thinking leaving a handbag on display in the car. Likewise a walk in the woods surely is one of the more appropriate times to carry your mobile on you (albeit not with the expectations of this particular scenario)...?

Regarding the alarm - I'm not sure what is supposed to happen in that circumstance (although I'd like to thing it should set it off)...

So with a roadster, if you put the alarm on with the roof down, does the alarm go off if someone leans/reaches into the car?

Surly the proximity sensors should detect the glass breaking and falling into the car.

Sorry about your losses, its a horrible feeling. I had my car broken into when I was 18, stole my rucksack with all my college work in and nearly failed the year because of it.

Depends how you lock it

Press the button oncr lock and alarm set

Press twice locked but movement sensors in cabin not set (for if you leave the roof down windows open ot someone in the car
