Some people have been wondering where they can buy the short weighted gear shift knob shown below:

This is through Tischer BMW of Silver Spring, MD, and not some fly-by-night retailer. The free shipping was very fast, arrived via UPS in just a couple days. I'd definitely shop there again (although the site search/navigation are terrible, I probably wouldn't find what I was looking for).

The throws seem so much shorter, and a lot more precise. Not to mention the leather feels a lot nicer in your hand than the cheapo plastic. The silver ring around the bottom also ties in very nicely with the aluminum trim. For around 50 bucks, it's probably one if not THE best bang for your bucks mods you can do.

could someone with this knob help me take a close look and see if the grain pattern and colour is similar to the original Z4 knob and that it matches the grain pattern/colour of the shift boot as well?

louis I fitted this to my Z and it looks great, not aftermarket at all - it's a great mod. When I traded my Z I couldn't find my original knob otherwise I would have swapped it out with the ZHP knob and then given it to someone on here.

I can 100% guarantee you wouldn't regret getting it

So... does this weighted knob actually improve shifting enough to prevent the occasional "2nd gear grinding?"

Don't know about anyone else, but I've found with the extra weight you're more likely to engage the gears fully. Because the travel is slightly less, I'm inclinded to give it more of a shove than probably needed as the muscle memory thinks it needs to travel further. Maybe that'll change in time.

Did this mod to my M3. The stock M3 shifter/boot is a nice 1 piece Napa leather assembly but it sits way too high and we refer to it as the M3 broomstick.

I had to replace the boot with the 3-series one which is not the smooth grain Napa but it still looks great and did improve the shift feel. Its not a short shift kit by any means or stretch but it does improve the feel and now I can just use my wrist action to shift (not recommended though)...

Hmnmm, i don't remember seeing those types of accesories at Tischer's, its only 5 miles from my house, i went there Sunday but they were closed, guess i need to look a little closer :rofl:
