Short Scottish road trip

So, quite independently of the group here that did the mini NC500, I had a colleague visiting me from the US and we decided to do an ad hoc road trip up north to Scotland.

Over 4 days and three nights we travelled up from Soton (via the Cotswolds for the scenic route) then up the M6 to Carlisle, further north then East to Perth, towards Inverness then Tain. Then back down southwest along Loch Ness to Fort William then further East to Oban, a trip around the coast heading towards Loch Lomond then back down to Soton.

1,350 miles in my 30i sDrive Msport - top down almost all the way (there were a few heavy downpours) - it was great fun and what a wonderful car to drive in that setting!

Looking forward to doing a more full NC500 another day!

I see you you put a very small dent in the Scottish midge population from the appearance of your front bumper!

😂 and that was only on day 1!! Tomorrow I give the car a deep clean!

Done that a few times. A distillery around every corner. Driving through Glencoe's worth a detour if you go again. :)

Looks like a good one. Can I ask what sort of times you were in the car for in any one go, i.e. 4hrs etc?

Would love to do this but wifey has a dodgy back and doesn't like sitting in one position for too long.

We had breakfast at 8:30am each day - a leisurely breakfast! - and by 10am were on the road, by 7pm - almost on the nail - we were at our destination after driving about 300 miles, stopping for comfort breaks, lunch and some photos etc. It didn't feel too onerous. We did do the trip back to Soton from Glasgow in on go - so more driving than usual but we needed to get back on time for onward travel etc.

Some great roads. I was passenger on a similar route on Friday/Saturday from Southampton to Fort William. Some bad traffic on Friday on the M6, hope you managed to avoid that! I thought Loch Lomond looked particularly stunning and wished I was driving the Zed for that bit!

Wow, some great photos there OP.

They remind me of my leisurely Scottish trip in 2008 with Mrs Tidy in my (then nearly new) 123d - wish I'd had my Z4 though. :(

Still it was a great trip, but we went East to West. Our first night was in Duns (my late Dad was a big Jim Clark fan), followed by a couple of nights in Edinburgh, a night in Dundee, onwards to Elgin for a night via Aberdeen, then a night in Inverness as I wanted to visit Muir of Ord seeing as my Dad was born there! So we also visited the distillery there, as you do.

Then across to the West and a night in Ballachulish, one in Fort William and a couple in Oban, followed by a trip to the Isle of Skye by ferry then back over the bridge.

Some great roads, and fantastic scenery. To be fair I appreciated it more doing it at a leisurely pace than if we had done it in a few days, which wasn't going to happen anyway with the OH on board - but that did me a favour!

I'd love to do it again in my Z4, but without the OH this time seeing as Mrs Tidy now lives 200 miles away from me.

It's definitely well worth doing.
