Short number plates.

I recently purchased a 5 digit personalised reg number for my other half's car. I have since been trying to get the plates made (legally) without the huge borders that a normal sized plate would have.

I have read that 330mm x 111mm is the shortest measurement you can legally have on 5 digit reg plates. The only problem is trying to find someone selling these.

A few years ago I bought a shortened reg plate for my Z4, but I think that was before they tightened the regs regarding plate makers and the sale of them.

Any ideas? I have found a company on eBay selling 350mm x 111mm, but none any shorter than that. They also require lots of ID, which I'm not able to scan/not willing to send copies of over the Internet.

Back in the day there was none of this messing around

from my recollection I used companies selling what is deemed show plates.
it covers them then, so no paperwork needed.

i did have a look for showplates, but these dont have the text required on the bottom middle/bottom right of the plate.

its like a complete minefield :x

I've been using this company for my plates: https://www.a1showplates.com/
I keep to 'standard road legal' for rear plate, but been a bit naughty and had to select show plate for front. You can alter sizes. There's no text bottom middle but its never concerned me.

I got my plates from here https://www.platesforcars.co.uk/designer.php#numberplates The company is in Ireland and don’t ask for any paperwork. Mine are the normal size but on the website you can specify different sizes.

yeh of course things have changed over the last few years, has to have details on bottom of plate now.
mine have Porsche centre Exeter on, as my mate made me up a set for a fiver :)

I have a couple of private plates and have always just had them made online without any paperwork.

I've never had a problem

Fourdot plates will do you exactly what you want and will guarantee legality:

Plus one for "plates for cars", excellent service and legal if so required. They'll also provide custome sizes. Used them a couple of times and I can vouch for their quality.

I suppose it's possible that the eBay sellers simply state the paperwork required in adverts to cover their own backs? Either way, it's rather annoying

Ben not sure of all the new rules but I have been running with a 5 digit plate for many years.

I used to have shortened plates but the letter size and spacing was correct and nothing else on the plate.

When buying the Z I went back to a full size plate but nothing on the plate apart from the numbers and digits I did get a advisory on an MOT and when I asked why as I had run them for years on my Calibra was informed due to the age of that car it was OK but the Z being newer was a problem so I just bought a legal set for MOT time and I still run my plates with no info apart from my number and after 10 years no probs

As above I have mine made up as show plates

one of the reasons I love it here, smaller plates available straight from the government dept of transport standard size above, 'slimline' below, takes out all of the worrying!

you lied. well, sort of

purchased some on ebay Friday night. I bought a short rear plate and front and rear standard sized plates from 2 different sellers.

the short rear plate seller left me feedback and i haven't heard anything from them regarding documents.

the front and rear standard sized plate seller sent me a message last night requesting documents, which i'm definitely not going to be sending through ebay. you never know who's going to get your personal details

i'll see if the short rear plate turns up. But i'll go to a local motor spares place to get the standard ones made up instead.

what a long winded bloody joke this is

Should have taken my advice and gone to platesforcars. :D Quick delivery, no hassle, no documents.

I think I checked them last week and decided not to pursue them when they wanted 35 quid delivered for 2 plates :o but thanks anyway

The short rear plate from eBay has been dispatched, so it looks like I'll just need a standard front plate, which I'll probably go to Halfords for
