Short break in Edinburgh

get the train from Derby - direct route to Edinburgh Waverley - takes about 4 hours but very scenic past Newcastle

EDIT: £114 for off-peak return.

didnt think about the train! not a bad price, much less then expected. But still more then flying! Its madness!
 
Just remembered i never updated this thread....

S0 we went to Edinburgh beginning of Dec - coincidentally on st andrews day, went by train... was £70 something each.... was great except the line was flooded so had to change in York.. still only 4.5 hours.

We loved Edinburgh.. as it was st andrews had free entry to the castle, and the fireworks with cannons at night were amazing!

Things we liked:
The castle (day and night),
This illusion museum which was so much fun,
The Edinburgh Dungeons
The Scottish parliment - had a kids activity day so was fun playing with all the science toys!

Things we didnt like:
Almost made it to arthurs seat (endured 1 hours of complaining from the GF - so gave up at the summit before it got dark!)
The underground city haunted tour
The cold (day temp when we went was 2 degrees!)
 
I was disappointed by Edinburgh castle, there are much better ones in Scotland (IMO), however I thought the palace was really good. I also thought the Royal Yacht Britanna was fab! We had high tea on the deck at the end and although it was expensive it was lovely (food and experience wise)

Edinburgh is a fantastic place, I would love to live there.
