Shoe warning symbol on dash of 2013 Z4

Hi

My Z4 is 7 months old and for the last couple of days I have had a problem starting it in the usual way I have done for the last two months since owning it. I usually push the fob in and then push the electronic start button with no problems, but last night and this morning this just does not work. A symbol comes up on the dash which is a shoe with a line under it which indicates that it is telling me to put my foot on a pedal but not telling me which one. Can anyone help me please?

brake pedal most probably !

I certainly had to have my foot on the brake pedal to start my e61 using the same type of method. The odd thing is, yours hasn't asked for thatg before.

Does it now start when you put your foot on the brake pedal and press the start button?

I am at work now so will try again when I go home at 4.30. I have rung BMW and they say I should be putting my foot on the clutch to start the car with the electronic ignition.

On a manual the clutch pedal should be depressed. On an auto the brake pedal.

It's a safety mechanism to prevent the car moving when it turns over. The oh's IQ does the same.

Thank you very much for explaining this for me. It hasn't happened until last night so I must put my foot on the clutch without realising it in the past and just not done it last night and this morning.

Starting a manuel car without pressing the clutch is bad practise anyway - more work for the starter motor to turn the whole gearbox as well so more pressure on the battery.

Not to mention the risk that it was actually in gear ...

It was a normal practice to stick it in gear and turn the key if you wanted to move the vehicle a foot or so, worked great... until my landcruiser took off running across a parking lot and me running beside it....

its probably a good thing that the clutch has to be pressed now

I thought that you wanted to stop people from putting their feet on the dash...... :D

How did the story end? :D

 I needed to move the truck so I could drop the tailgate to put some ice chains in..... the 60m dash followed with a LeMans type leap into the cab and pressing hard on the brake and the clutch. Another 20 yds and we would have hit the other side of the lot, and the parked vehicles etc.....phew.

Good thing I was a lot younger and faster ...

SARS: I didn't get it at first.... Good one
