Shock horror: GR Supra faster than M2 Comp!

Over that distance, that time difference doesn't really say much to me. More importantly would be which one was more fun to drive, more engaging? I've never understood this obsession with a car that is fractions of a second faster over a lap is somehow 'better' than another car. It's like measuring the spreadability of butter on toast and using that to determine which is better

Absolutely......

Problem is the world is full of ‘Mines better than yours’ willywaving bores, you have to let these ‘Enthusiasts’...and I use that word in its loosest form....indulge their bragging rights hysteria....all in the name of freedom of speech......even though we know it’s utter bollocks... :P

I know when we had the Atom we had waaaaaaaay more fun and less crash-anxiety than the lambo and ferrari boys at the 'ring even though we were sometimes a lot slower!
Watching the sparks fly out from the back of a Diablo's undercarriage just after the dip after Bruncchen then seeing it wiggle it's hips and then overtaking it was MOST satisfying!

In that sense, they're probably as enjoyable to track as each other.
I think the M2 would depreciate less.

M2 Competition has the S55 engine.

I’d take an M car with an M engine over a Toyota with an M-Performance engine anyday.

They're both plenty quick enough. It's simply a matter of which the driver enjoys driving the most. :D :driving:

The figures have been purely academic since the average sports car went past 300bhp some years ago IMHO.

Isnt an S55 just a fettled N55 ?

The B58 is supposed to be an awesome lump.
Yes and no. The S55 stems from the N55 but they’re very different, the main difference being that the S55 is a twin-turbo engine whereas the N55 uses a single twin-scroll turbocharger.

The B58 (the N55’s replacement) is also a single twin-scroll turbocharged engine.

In terms of usability the S55 has much more tuning capabilities than the N55 or B58. It also provides a more linear power delivery and does not run out of puff at the top end unlike the single turbocharger engines.

However, from a sound perspective the S55 (imo) does not sound as good as the N55 or B58 due to it being muffled from the twin turbochargers. Single turbos generally sound better with naturally aspirated (no turbos) sounding the best.

If you’re just pottering around town none of this really matters, but if you’re into you’re driving then it does.

Ah

I meant the engine really

Not the bits bolted onto it .. I thought the S55 was just an N55 that effectively had a stroker crank and rods..

Both have 3.0l displacement so the S55 isn’t really a stroker.

It also has a closed-deck engine block (as opposed to the N55’s open-deck block) and forged pistons and a much more efficient cooling system.

Imo it’s a different and better engineered engine.

Have a read here for further info: https://www.bmwblog.com/2019/03/29/video-bmw-s55-engine-teardown-shows-differences-to-n55/

I was wondering if any of you have driven the new Supra. I see they have turned the power up to match the Z4 in 2021.
I read 2021 handles better, less tendency to step out behind sounds good...I just dislike those fake vents all over it. ANd hey - there is a 4 banger 255 hp version this year.
