Shock Absorber replacement

Hi all,

Looking for a little bit of guidance please.

Mechanic has just told me that one of the shocks is leaking and needs replacing. Not urgently but he says that the last time he tried to find one for an old z4 it was difficult. Either out of stock or silly money. Last time he ended up finding a second hand one apparently but took quite a while.

Its the front passenger side.

I didnt want to bother him with this so agreed to try and find one myself. New or otherwise.

I had a look and seemed to find some based on my reg at about £120ish that said they fit. Not cheap for a shock but not horrendous money? I want to be sure to get the right one though if anyone can help guide me with this please? For instance some seemed to want me to pick between a couple of options - something about a hexagonal top nut??

Mine is a 2008 so e85 Z4 Roadster. 2.0

Failing that I will just have to go back to the garage and ask him to help me but I though I would see if any of the people on here could steer me right instead.

Thanks all.

Put your reg into euro car parts or autodoc and look for Sachs as they are oem.
Autodoc are currently at 30% discount and a front left Sachs is £100. But they do go up to 38-42% if you can wait.
I would also consider new top mount, bump stop and definitely the lower knuckle bolt too.
Depending on age if the other components you may end up with a mismatch in handling.
Those shocks wear out without necessarily leaking.
I think if it were me I would consider doing both sides

When you did your roof motor did you notice if the insulation over the rear mount and been cut at all? If not then your rears are originals too.
Using Autodoc I can usually source all the parts I need for all four corners, keeping the original springs, for around £400. Sachs dampers, Lemforder top mounts, Febi bump stops and dust covers. Go to BMW for the front knuckle bolts.

Thanks for this, very useful and I have already found the various bits on Autodoc. Might wait and see if the discount increases though as I want to get both sides done and its all a little expensive.

Put all the bits into your basket and they will update every day.
Remember to use the app as it always seems a bit cheaper than the website

Also with Autodoc if you use the App there is a facility to check in each day which builds up an additional discount.

Just checked and up to 41% discount today on the App.
