Shipping Hardtop UK to USA Questions

Hi all,

I have had interest in my hardtop from an American buyer in Texas. I am entertaining the possibility of shipping it out.

Would anyone have any suggestions on how I could do this as affordably as possible?

I understand it will be costly, but for an American buyer the £1000 in shipping is no big deal as hardtops over there are $5000. I was interested to know if anyone has done it and who I should look to go with if I do decide to ship it.

As far as I am aware, the hardtop seems to be larger than a standard pallet size. Does anyone know what dimensions I will need and how much a custom pallet would cost me? Are there alternatives to a custom pallet?

I am all ears for suggestions!

Thank you

Thanks for your reply, I have tried parcel2go and parcelmonkey.

As the package will need to be palletised I am going to have to go with a freight service which I have never done before.

Lot of MR2 Roadster hardtops go abroad for the same reason, very expensive there as they never got them as an option. Nainly from one or two breakers who have it down to a fine art.
Frankly, unless they are offering you a premium for yours, it's not worth the hassle.

Feels like a lot of hassle when you could just sell it to someone in the UK for a few quid less. Why bother?

That's exactly what I was thinking for the hassle, I have come back to him with a price I think is fair to cover my time, the hardtop, postage and packaging.

I will see what he says but for the time being I want to see if it's even viable to do. It seems like a difficult process.

It is seeming to be a lot of hassle. But if someone with experience can give me some guidance. And the buyer is happy to pay a premium it may be worth my time.

What about speaking to one of the big international carriers, like fedex, UPS or DHL? See what they say about the logistics?

I will try speaking with them later today and see what I can do. I have spoken with someone who has shipped internationally before and that's put me in the right direction.

I am trying to figure out how to palletise and package it so it can arrive undamaged. I am currently considering even making my own pallet to save on costs!

Still, all of this is just so I have a clear picture of whether it is worth shipping it. I have given the buyer a price. I am waiting for his response. If he is happy with the price I have proposed I would have to consider shipping it.

As others have said cost is £1000+ the size would be around 2000x1500x600 allowing for packaging add £100 for crate it can be done, the only economic way is to share a container with other goods

How much is a shared container? I think I am leaning towards air freight. How safe is this service for delicate items?

Would you be able to point me in the right direction for sourcing a crate and packaging for this? I was considering a pallet with a cardboard box for it to go in and a lot of bubble wrap and foam.

Would you suggest a crate instead? And where would you source a crate of those dimensions?

Thank you for the help!

Only you can put a value on your time. Personally, a couple of hundred quid is not worth all the running around and faff.

Shared Container is probably Safest and most Economical , UPS are probably worth talking too .

This is going to be a world of pain for you unless you want to try to make a business out of it.

I sold a pair of aero sills to a member in Holland and it was a major PITA to pack them up and get them there, worry about shipping costs, import duties, customs, damage etc. All worked out fine in the end, but in retrospect I should have just fitted them to my car, driven over there, then driven back without any sills!

I cannot imagine the hassle of shipping a hardtop to America.

I thought I should just look into it before I say no. Pack and Send just got back to me and they want £2200! I don't think that is an option. I may try to get another quote supplying my own packaging and see how that goes they're not far from me and they door to door so it's definitely the easiest option so far.
