Shipkillers Site

Perhaps he could be persuaded to re-open the site as a members only site .... all memberships must be approved etc. And they can be revoked as well  (possible donations for upkeep as well ?? )

All you'd see is the front page with a log in screen.....

That's a real pity...I managed to sort out my water logged roof motor following his guide...saved me a small fortune.

I am very sad to hear this site is gone (having only recently got a z4)

Who could possibly have motive to attack such a site? any why bother?!

Personally I don't think it's a case of hosting costs, it seems to be a principle thing. I've always been more than happy to host it all here but he never seemed keen.

This is a real shame, in my newbie days of Z4 ownership I found the site insightful and helpful :(

:o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Noooooooo! That was probably the best single site for comprehensive guides on any car I've ever owned.

Wish I'd saved the lot.

Note to self, the internet is not permanent.

His site was very useful! I can't understand how some people think and act. Do we have any contact info of him so that we can try to change his mind? :?
May be if all of us show our support he will make second thoughts.

I took the site down but it really was never about costs. I have free hosting on Rackspace (my son is a senior sys admin).

It really was/is about the new breed of BMW owners and the general state of human beings.
On the first point, used Z4’s have come down in price to the point that the ‘Fast and Furious’ crowd can now afford one (the Z4) and they expect the ‘reliability’/’repair ability’ to be the same as their old Honda’s. Because you can afford the price of admission (purchase price), does not mean you can afford the car……

Then, when they make their first post on one of the forums, they expect EVERYONE (because their problem is SOOOOO fricking important) to drop all and respond with a two page, detailed, step by step procedure to fix their issue. Never mind that the forum has discussed the issue to death and to spend five minutes with the forum search button or to do a Google search is somehow beneath them. They do not have an issue doing a internet search for donkey porn, but search for a solution to fix your car??? Sacrilege

The search issue is really a pet peeve of mine….

Now because you did not treat them like a king and because in today’s society, people just do not know how to communicate AND people take offence at almost everything that is said, they go move directly into attack mode. Conversely, sometimes even weirder (is that a word?) things happen. One of the more knowledgeable people on the forum will actually take the time out of their lives to give the said individual all the information needed to correct the issue. Now said individual (who does not know which end of a screwdriver to use) attempts the repair or modification. Said individual screws it up. Now said individual goes directly into retaliation mode because said individual perceives that the person went out of their way to give them faulty information…. not taking ANY responsibility for their own actions or lack of knowledge. This has happened more than once.
Or the individual who tell you are completely wrong, even after you take the time out to post the facts and diagrams, still tell you that you are an idiot… then after they have screwed up their car, unapologetically want you to help them fix the issue they created.

If you noticed the trend over the last year or two, that I have mostely stopped posting for many reasons. I can handle the above situations quite well. What I do not tolerate, is the perceived (by me) silent ostracism on the forums. I ask a question and no one responds… even the individuals that post just to see their own posts and have nothing really constructive to say, do not answer… Over the last year, I have asked nine questions on the forums. One person answered…. Is it in my head?

If you go through all my posts over the last six years, I do not think I have ever said a negative word about someone’s car. Even when they solicit said comments. I usually keep my mouth shut. My philosophy is, ‘it’s your car, and do what you want to it’.... so its not because I bad mouthed your car…….

I will always help someone who specifically asks for help, (unless you were one of the ones that stabbed me in the back) but for the community as a whole?? You have already told me that you do not want my help.
I do not see this situation getting any better in the next several years. So I am walking away.

The one thing that everyone forgets: It’s just a freaking car….. You can get a new car…

Hey Shipkiller
Thanks for all your help and advice.
I for one appreciated it immensely.
As one of the best to ever roll down the Pike...
You will be missed.

Being new to the forum and therefore ignorant of ShipKillers expertise, I was very saddened to read his post which clearly reflects an attitude by a small minority that is becoming all too familiar in our society today. Sad to see anyone walk away.

This may be true of some but after some 33 years of company cars, I took early retirement and wanted a car to tinker with and enjoy. Your site was a great source of information and it's a shame that others like me can't use it in the future.

True

The search issue is really a pet peeve of mine….

Understandable

Of course people should take responsibility, I've not really noticed it on here though.

I can't see any questions of yours on here, only helpful advice

If this forum or it's members are guilty of the abuse you mention on your site I can understand why you've had enough but if are we being tarred with the same brush as some other bmw sites it seems a shame you should walk away from us. Also for future Z4 owners not to have access to your excellent articles is a waste. Could we not host them on here?

Hi Shipkiller

A big shame, I found your site previously through Google searches linking from other BMW sites. It was invaluable for such details that are a bit blurry when found previously on other threads/post etc. Big shame. There are some dorks out there, but I'd I'd like to think it is the minority!

Cheers all the same.

Hi Shipkiller - its sad what you think about the community, but I think its in every car community - the easiest solution is to protect the content of your sit by access password, and give the login and password only to those you would like to allow.
I think it would be better than just destroying all the content you worked on.

I can sympathise here. Albeit I've not contributed to your level ShipKiller. I've posted quite a bit trying to help others and have had some quite puzzling attacks, being called all sorts but in general any advice or thoughts have been 99% positively received. Sure I get some flack for taking the micky now and then, but you've got to take a little when you give a little now and then. I love being part of this forum, its addictive, for good or the bad and even though I may one day move on from the Z, I'll find losing the forum equally difficult. Looking back on it, those that get all shirty are quickly recognised by other forum users that you'e helped and are put in their place by the 'force'.

Dear Shipkiller,

You have helped me fix my windows every time I have disconnected the battery. My drains are clear because of you. Through your efforts I realised what a feckin idiot I would be to even try to do my roof motor myself, given my level of competence with a spanner. And I learned loads of other great stuff. Most of which I understood.

Thank you

Theres always going to be arseholes out there .... Just a real shame that in this case the arseholes get to dictate whats happening.
Never used shipkillers site myself but Ive read lots about it on here ...
Proper shame its gone.

I have and maintain my own Bikers site, and am well aware just how much hassle a few big gobs can be .... Thought a few times about shutting it down .... But then, bloody mindness set in and I said f**k them lolol ....

You didn't need to post an explanation, it's your prerogative to stop when you chose, but thanks all the same.

I cant be specific about the questions you haven't had a reply on, but I imagine if you're the one need to ask, there's very few people who would know the answer to respond? Who knows.

Anyway, thanks for the website while it was there, it helped me on a number of occasions. I would think helping people and writing guides is something you enjoy, so good luck with whatever you do next.

What a world we live in eh? A bloke spends many hours creating a valuable resource for others, for no benefit to himself, and people actually have a go at him.

Maniac - I'm also surprised and disappointed you've had the same issues as Shipkiller.

I hope you both continue to contribute to this Forum. It would be a duller place without you both.

It's a real shame.
