Sheffield to Gretna Green

A week after i got the zed my cousin told me he's getting married in late december in gretna green, scotland. As you can imagine i'm just excited about the drive there and back through the lakes!

Can anyone recommend a good route from Sheffield to Gretna Green taking in the mountains at the Lakes? Also if theres anywhere in Scotland near Gretna Green i can head to on the way back etc.

Oh my - the world's your lobster.

That's a good route that Spokey has set out. But sometimes the suggested route from Kendal to Penrith can get a bit clogged with traffic (although it's very pretty). If you were more interested in "putting your car through it's paces" than sightseeing, I can recommend the taking the A6 from Kendal to Penrith. The bit from Kendal to Shap is especially good, but last time I did it I did see a mobile "safety" camera.

On the way back I can also recommend heading out from Carlisle to Brampton (by any route you like) and then take the A689 from Brampton to Alston and, for a real treat, the B6277 from Alston to Middleton-in-Teesdale. Yeeehaaarr

I live in Cumbria so get the chance to use these roads a lot

Funny how people relate same names to different things: OJ's ex-wife house (where she was killed) was on Gretna Green.

well i'll be driving up on a sunday so hopefully the traffic should be ok. i've got a full day to drive back so the B6277 sounds like a good idea to me!

Ah, 'tis a great road. It runs through some of the most dramatically remote moorland scenery in the north Pennines and constantly twists, turns rises and falls. Well worth giving this a go if you're in the area.

Mate you are an absolute star!! Just off the phone to the garage and they forgot to add that the car also has SAT NAV!!I mentioned that somebody maybe coming to have a look at it and he wants me to phone back tonight so I'll let him know you might be round at some point - but if you can't no worries.
