Share/Stock dealing....

I am interested in "playing the stock market" but if you have never done it before - it does appear to be quite daunting! Anyone here actively selling/buying shares, and if so, any advice you can offer? Like where to start, what sites you use to transact, any good articles or tutorials that one can look at?
Would also be interesting to know from those who have been doing it for a while, what their return has been, over say a few years.

I was before the credit crunch. I still hold many Barclays shares (bought them just before the crash) :( .

Ive been playing virtual for a few months now but the profits are small, probably reflecting my tentative nature :roll:
