I got news recently that I'll be going to Japan and China for my international residency. Do you guys have any tips on places to see, what to do or not do and ways of finding cheap airfare? I'll be heading out there late April for two weeks.

I have been to Tokyo, Japan many times. Surprisingly clean city for 20+ millions people. Do not even think about driving there. If you have the chance go to Kamakura it's the coastal city where the Great Buddha is. The countryside contrasts so much with the cities. Akihabara is the neighbourhood in Tokyo where all the latest electronics are sold. You'll get the latest stuff there a year before it gets in NA at half the price you'll pay here. Try to go eat at japanese restaurants for japanese if they have english or picture menus. Otherwise you'll get fleeced if you go tourist restaurant. The OK chain of restaurants is excellent.

The McDonalds in Tokyo serve hot dogs and Teriyaki burger that are delicious.

Thanks for the tips. I'll add them to my list of things to do. I really wanted to go to the hot springs while I was there. But I don't think they'll let me in with my tattoos.

Shanghai... go to Wujiang Lu (street), find a place called Yang's Fry Dumpling. IMHO one of the world's best pan fried XLBs. :D Half dozen of their monster dumplings filled with pork & soup for under a buck. While you're there you can shop the #1 Shopping District as well as enjoy the People's Park.

Don't forget to check out the French Concession to sample some of the best french bakery goodies outside of France.

Shopping and eating are the two big things in shanghai and when the lights go down the night life is never ending, your best bet is to pick up a “what to do in Shanghai” book at the airport.
If your sad like me take a trip on the levy train from pudong airport to down town Shanghai great fun at 480 kph :o also if your have the money go for dinner at the Cloud 9 restaurant on the 87th floor of the Grand Hyatt top view from up there.:camera:
But one thing you must NEVER do is go to a Chinese opera  2 weeks in hell would be a whole lot better.
