SGA: Turn your traction control off in the snow!

I think we all need a day out at the Oulton Park low grip circuit.

Don't know why they don't do them in winter anymore, as there's less more chance of the circuit staying extra-slippy all day :evil:

I am however very nervous about what might happen in my current one - I am not sure if I need to touch anything as the DSC seems to be less intrusive anyway, with the LSD picking up the slack. All off could be lethal in snow... Of course we need some decent snow down south before I can practice :roll:

I had my Z4M and a 520d at the same time and trying to get them both off the drive was a very different experience, traction off on both cars and the Zed made it look easy whereas the 520d struggled and a LSD is a real benefit.

I am as far away from a driving god as you can imagine but I like to be in control and for me traction aids just add to the problem because when all said and done YOU are not in control and that has always worried me!

You can't turn TC off in an ///M, only DSC can be turned off. It has mechanical TC in the form of an LSD.

Yes sorry I just meant all electronic aids off, the DSC still cuts power if its not switched off and it cuts the throttle back and it did the same in my M3 so I turned it off in that as well...bloody electronics they get on my nerves!

Give me my TVR back...no traction electronics...just a V8 and a LSD and your right foot and that is all you ever needed!

Thanks to Meeko ... You can ;-) A little DTC light comes on my dash these days which allows plenty of spin in a straight line, a little leeway sideways but still cuts the power when you go too far.

But I do have winter tyres too. So in general if I mooch along with the traffic it turns out okay. I also have 260mm of snow on our road so I had to get out backwards this morning to avoid turning the car into a snowplough.

A word of warning!

I reversed my wifes A4 out over some deep snow and when I drove away there was something flapping and banginig under the car!
Snow had firmly packed itself beteween an engine/ gearbox undertray and the car body shell , then smashed the tray mounts!

Cost me a few quid at the dealer! :x

I posted a video on that z4 Facebook page of me getting my car up a steep snowy hill. Did really well (winter tyres)
Only reason it ever slipped was because of the open diff
(My TC is permanently off anyway)

I hope this photo is just before you cleared the rest of that snow off your car? Frustrates me when people just clear a gap in the windscreen and then snow is blowing off there car into traffic behind.

on another note. A colleague who I pick up on the way to work has about a 20 min walk to get to where I pick him up from. This morning he saw a fiesta driving like a complete d**k. Right up the arse of a people carrier with a family in. The people carrier pulled over to pick up another kid (school run?) and the fiesta went flying past. A short walk later and my colleague saw the fiesta again. This time wrapped around a lamppost. karma is fun.
